One of the three people killed in a mass shooting at an In-N-Out Burger in Twin Falls, Idaho, on Aug. 1 has been identified as a man who grew up in Canyon Country.
Shooting victim Christopher Claunch, 59, lived in Idaho for three decades, but grew up in Canyon Country, Claunch’s sister Kimberly Castaneda told KTLA.
Their father, John Claunch, taught for many years in the Sulphur Springs Union School District and served as principal at Mint Canyon Elementary School.
Claunch, a California native, lost his first wife in a car crash three months after they married. In Idaho, he built a new life with his partner of 25 years, Teresa Sperry.
After struggling with alcoholism for much of his adult life, Claunch found sobriety two years ago at Renaissance Ranch Recovery Center in Rupert, Idaho, where he later worked, according to The New York Times.
Though Claunch lived outside California for much of his life, he always visited In-N-Out when he returned to the Pacific Coast, Castaneda said. He told her he planned to wait until the hype died down at the Twin Falls location, knowing opening days would draw long lines.
Castaneda told The New York Times her brother was an excellent cook and the life of the party, adding that if they hold a memorial, it will be standing room only.
Claunch was one of three people killed and at least seven others wounded in the shooting, according to the Twin Falls Police Department. The suspected shooter, Chad Williams, 24, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities are still investigating a possible motive.
Ashley Garibay, 23, of Stockton, California, and Dale Schultz, 66, of Salt Lake City, Utah, also died in the shooting.
