Weekend Sees Halloween, Birthday Celebrations
As Saugus School
District celebrates 100 years in education, the
Sheriff’s bring Halloween fun to the masses.
Sunday afternoon was a busy one for Santa Clarita, as two major
events were put on for kids.
At Bridgeport Park,
School District hosted a day in the
park for students, parents and SCV residents to celebrate their 100 year
The first school in the District opened in Santa Clarita
in1908, after three families donated the start up costs. While the original
school closed in the 1970’s, the District continued to grow to a point where it
now educates nearly 11,000 students in 15 schools across the Valley.
Thousands turned out for the event, which included a special
booth for each of the schools, individually designed and decorated by the
“It is just amazing to have it come together and to have it
be so successful,” said Saugus Superintendent Dr. Judy Fish.
As for the next 100 years, Dr. Fish says the District will
continue the successful trend.
“The future is going to be just as exciting,” she said.
Just a few streets away at the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s
station, deputies hosted a big party for kids and parents in costume. The
annual Haunted Jailhouse carnival played up all of the Sheriff’s Department
team members and gadgets. Kids were allowed to rappel with Search and Rescue
unit members, climb aboard the Special Weapons and Tactic’s armored vehicle and
check out a Mounted Posse horse.
A costume contest gave the young participants a chance to
show their stuff, and in between, the audience was entertained by the dancers
from Elite Dance studio.
The dance program had a 60’s beach party theme, interlaced
with Halloween spookiness, and it featured Elite’s top dancers.
“Everyone has a chance to become part of our performance
dance group,” said Amber Berry, Elite Instructor. “They’re the ones who
audition, put in a lot of hours. But we encourage anyone who wants to be a part
of it to come out and join our group.”
Elite teaches dancers 2 years of age up to adults.
