Valencia Student Plans Her Trip To Costa Rica

11th Grader Alyssa Morse fundraises to go on a mission in El Sur, Costa Rica.

While most kids will be relaxing this summer, one girl will be working to make a difference, not only in her community but also in another country.  Valencia junior Alyssa Morse has her mind set on going to serve the poor in Costa Rica.

Like most kids, Morse was looking for something to do this summer and while doing some research, she found the perfect idea.

“I really wanted to do something exciting this summer.  I found out about Globe Aware and have decided that I want to serve in Costa Rica.  I want to make a difference, something that won’t just affect my school or my community, but that would actually make a global impact.”  After doing her homework on the organization, Morse has her plan all set.

Globe Aware is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that was founded in 1993 and operates international volunteer programs in 14 different countries. Globe Aware strives to establish short-term volunteer programs in international environments that encourages cultural awareness and promotes environmental sustainability.

While Morse chose to build a recycling station for the small village of El Sur, Globe Aware also offers a variety of projects, which include building pedestrian bridges, installing and burying new PVC water pipes, painting schools, planting trees and setting up first aid centers.

But in order for her to go to Costa Rica on July 5, she must raise a total of $2,100 and must turn in $1,000 by June 5.

While Morse has faith that her family and community will support her, she has also made plans in case she doesn’t have the money in time.

“Even though I’m hoping I’ll have the money before the deadline, if I don’t, I will do one of the following things with the money that was already donated:  Globe Aware will keep it in an account in my name for up to one year to put towards a future trip to Costa Rica, or I will donate it to Globe Aware for use in their other programs.”

Morse is encouraging Santa Clarita residents to donate whatever they can.  “If everyone could donate $1, I’d be all set.  My main goal is not only to go on this trip, but also raise awareness about this cause and hopefully make a difference.”

Morse has also created and launched her own website, which features more information about her, her trip, and ways to donate towards her cause.  Click here to see her website.
