HandsOn Santa Clarita “9/11 Day Of Service And Remembrance”

Details:  HandsOn Santa Clarita is honoring local first-responders through volunteer projects and a commemorative ceremony as a way to show support and gratitude.  HandsOn Santa Clarita is calling for volunteers to work in teams for painting, cleaning and performing jobs at the local Sheriff’s and fire stations.  Volunteers will also deliver meals and care packages for fire and American Medical Response stations.  That evening there will be a commemorative ceremony at Westfield Valencia mall to honor those who fell on September 11, and those first-responders who serve our local community every day.  From 5-7pm, there will be fire trucks and military vehicles, food vendors and exhibitors.  The ceremony starts at 7pm.  HandsOn Santa Clarita’s mission is to help in meeting community needs through volunteerism and service.  HandsOn Santa Clarita  Read more in an article on the KHTS website.  Volunteer and learn more online. 

Valencia United Methodist Church “Community Block Party”

Details:  Valencia United Methodist Church is holding a “Community Block Party”.  The event is free and all are welcome.  This family-friendly event will have fun activities for all ages including a giant waterslide, rock climbing wall, carnival games, door prizes, pie-eating contest, free hot dogs (and other food), and live music.  Have the kids bring a towel to use after their water fun. Rancho Camulos “Ramona Days”
When:  Saturday, September 7 from 1-6pm
Where: Rancho Camulos Museum and National Historic Landmark, 10 miles west on the 126 (from the I-5)
Details:  Ranch Camulos “where the history, myth and romance of Old California still lingers” is again holding “Ramona Days” to celebrate all things related to “Ramona”, the famous 19^th century Helen Hunt Jackson California novel.  Rancho Camulos is known as the Home of Ramona since it is the setting for the popular novel that expands on the Californio mission and rancho history. The 1910 silent movie “Ramona” starring Mary Pickford was in part filmed at Rancho Camulos. SCV Million Meal Marathon
When:  Saturday, September 7 from 8am-noon
Where:  Westfield Valencia Mall parking lot at Magic Mountain and Citrus
Details:  Come be a part of the 3^rd Annual SCV Million Meal Marathon and continue the chant from previous years, “Lentil, spice, chicken, rice!”  The meals will be packaged by volunteers and sent to starving children in Malawi and the Dominican Republic.  Nine local churches will be involved again, but, this year, instead of packaging individually, the churches are coming together for one giant packaging event.  Come at 8am to write letters and decorate boxes for the children. At two times during the event, from 9-10am and 11am-noon, participants will be packaging ready-to-cook, heat-sealed meals.  In order to participate in the packaging, a wristband is required (with a suggested donation of $5).  Wristbands are available at the nine churches involved.  Wristbands are not required to write letters or decorate boxes at any time during the event.  KHTS AM-1220 will be broadcasting live from the event.  Help the Children will have an exhibit.  The local churches involved:  Christ Lutheran, Crossroads Community, Living Grace, NorthPark Community, SouthValley, The Church On The Way Santa Clarita, The Sanctuary, and Valencia Hills Community.  More information is available online.  

COC “Open House”

Sheriff’s Department S.E.B. Mud Run

Where:  Pitchess Equestrian Center, 26893 Tapia Canyon, Castaic
Details:  The L.A. County Sheriff’s Department Special Enforcement Bureau, S.E.B., is holding their 18^th Annual SEB Mud Run.  The race is all new with a four mile fun course, a six mile challenge course, and a one mile kids run.  The Run is open to the public.  There will be activities for kids, vendors, music, food and drinks.  Parking is free but limited.  It is suggested that participants come early. SC Elks Lodge “Skip Henke Roast & Auction”

Details:  The Santa Clarita Elks Lodge presents the “Skip Henke Roast & Auction”. “6th Annual Health Fair”

Where:  Santa Clarita United Methodist Church, 26640 Bouquet Canyon Road
Details:  Come to the 6^th Annual Health Fair.  This free event is open to all.  Participants can get free screenings: Bone Density, Carotid Artery (stroke risk), Cholesterol, Eye Exams, Dental Exams, BMI and Blood Pressure, and Prostate Cancer Prevention.  There will be a Bike Safety program for children and a bike helmet give-away.  The Blood Mobile will be at the event for donations from 8am-1pm.  A Internet Safety Program, nutrition information, earthquake  prevention, and SCV CERT will also be featured.  Healthy snacks and drinks will be available.  This event is sponsored by Providence Holy Cross Medical Center and Santa Clarita United Methodist Church.  More information is available online (click on the Health Fair webslide). 

Special Olympics “Charity Golf Tournament”

City of Santa Clarita “CERT – Community Emergency Response Training”

Details:  The City of Santa Clarita  is offering a “CERT – Community Emergency Response Training” course.  This is a nationally certified course designed to help families, neighborhoods, schools and businesses prepare for effective emergency disaster response through training and preplanning.  The course features fire suppression/utility control, light search and rescue, terrorism disaster preparedness, triage disaster medical operations, and team organization and management.  The materials fee is $30 per person.  Participants must be at least 18 years old.  Register by calling 661-250-3700 or online.

SCV Search & Rescue Team “Golf Tournament”

Canyon High Cross Country “25^th Annual Castaic Lake Triathlon II”

Where:  Castaic Lake Lower Lake, Castaic Lake Drive
Details:  Canyon Cross Country is hosting the 25^th Annual Castaic Lake Triathlon with a 400 meter swim, 10 mile bike, and 3 mile run.  Pre-registration is $70 for individuals and $90 per team; race day registration is $80 for individuals and $100 per team.  There is a $6-$11 vehicle entrance fee.  More information is available online.

SCV Vietnam Wall  
When:  September 26 through September 29 – 24 hours a day
Where:  on Citrus Street side of the Westfield Valencia Town Center
Details:  Santa Clarita is poised to welcome the Traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall.  This wall is the largest traveling replica of the actual Vietnam Memorial Wall. It is an 80% replica with 100% of the names of the victims from the Vietnam War. Local resident Chuck Morris plays a definitive part in bringing the wall to Santa Clarita.  Morris helps organize the annual Memorial Day parade with the Friendly Valley Veterans Squad in Friendly Valley.  He heard about the wall but inquiries made him realize that it was much too big for Friendly Valley parade purposes.  But he thought of three important reasons for the traveling wall to come to Santa Clarita.  As Morris says, “The first was for people who have relatives or people who have relatives on the wall and can’t afford to go to Washington, D.C., so they can see the wall,” Morris said.  “The second reason is what an amazing thing this will be for our city,” Morris said, noting that the SCV has one of the highest per capita veteran populations in the state. Finally, “It’s also about education, he said, noting that most schools don’t include the Vietnam War in their history lessons.”  Many opportunities have arisen with the coming of the wall: kids essay contest for grades 4-6, volunteers for a continuous reading of the wall names, and more.  Read more online. 

Boy Scouts of America “Leaders of Character Recognition Dinner”
When:  Saturday, September 28 starting at 6pm  
Where:  Hyatt Regency Valencia, 24500 Town Center Drive at McBean Parkway in Valencia
Details:  The Hart District of Boy Scouts of America will hold their annual “Leaders of Character Recognition Dinner” to recognize honorees from the Santa Clarita Valley.  These honorees exemplify the Character, Values and Leadership espoused by the Boy Scout Oath and the Scout Law in their personal and public lives.  This year’s honorees are: Bob and Margo Hudson, Cary and Kirsten Quashen, and Fred and Kristen Arnold.  Arif Halaby, CEO of Total Financial Solutions in Newhall, started the event in 2006 when he was approached by a local Boy Scout troop that needed to raise money to buy equipment. Read more on the event in a story on the KHTS website.  

Michael Hoefflin Foundation “Evening Under The Stars”

City of Santa Clarita “NFL Punt, Pass & Kick Competition”

Details:  Kids can participate in one of the NFL’s longest-standing youth football traditions at the City of Santa Clarita’s “NFL Punt, Pass & Kick Competition”.  The competition includes boys and girls divisions in age categories 6-7, 8-9, 10-00, 12-13, and 14-15.  All participants launch one punt, one pass and one kick, with scores in distance and accuracy.  A participant registration form must be completed by a parent.  Participation forms will be available at the event.  More information is available by calling 661-250-3757 or online.

Details:  The Santa Clarita Valley will benefit from the Santa Clarita Ballet’s expanded production schedule.  The new production will includes “Swan Lake Act 2” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”.  The cast comes from the Santa Clarita Ballet Company and professional dancers.  The Company consists of top tier dancers with the highest rankings established by the Royal Academy of Dance.  “Swan Lake Act 2”  is “rich in story, choreography and the musical composition by Russian composer Peter Tchaikovsky.”  “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is “Shakespeare’s great comedy of meddling and quarrelsome fairies, and of the mortals who stumble into an enchanted forest filled with fairies, a beast and magical spells.”   Tickets: Adults, $20 for box/orchestra and $28 for balcony; children under 10 and seniors 65 and older are $26, any seat. GraceFest AV
When:  Friday, September 20 from 5-8pm; Saturday, September 21 from 11am-9pm
Where:  Palmdale Amphitheater, 2723 Rancho Vista Boulevard, Palmdale
