    Fitness Compound in Canyon Country closed this week--unexpectedly, according to a regular customer. They have transferred all of their active memberships to the Santa Clarita Athletic Club in Newhall.

    Santa Clarita American Legion Veteran Group Names New Leaders

    American Legion Post 507, a Santa Clarita-based organization supporting veterans of foreign wars, named a new commander Thursday. Jeanine “Tootsie” Imperial was named the new commander, and former SCV Man of the Year Greg Nutter will remain first vice commander, according to J.D. Kennedy, who led the local chapter of the nation’s largest wartime-service veterans organization for the last two years. “We’re chartered by Congress to help veterans get benefits,” Kennedy said. “We do that in many different ways -- we file the paperwork, assist veterans with access to their federal and state benefits -- but Post 507 has also worked with local businesses, the city, and other organizations to better serve veterans with any immediate needs they may have.”

    No ID For Victim Found In Late-Night Newhall Apartment Fire

    A dead body found in a Newhall apartment has Homicide Bureau detectives with the Sheriff’s Department investigating the scene of a burnt-out unit. Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel arrived on scene at the 26700 block of North Oak Crossing Road in the Friendly Valley area of Canyon Country at 11:35 p.m., officials said. “Fire was dispatched at 11:25 p.m.,” said Supervisor Keith Mora of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. “The call came in from an apartment across the street.”

    Rabid Bat Reported In Newhall, Third In County Since February

    Another rabid bat has turned up in the Santa Clarita Valley, at a residence in Newhall. It is the season's third rabid bat in Los Angeles County. Last year, nearly half of the rabid bats reported in the county were found in the SCV.

    Santa Clarita Plans Cycling Events To Kick Off Amgen Tour Of California

    In less than a month, the Amgen Tour of California will ride into the Santa Clarita Valley. In the week leading up to the race, the city has several family-friendly cycling events planned, including a community bike ride and the annual Bike to Work Day.
