    Santa Clarita To Join Call For More Time On Chiquita Canyon Landfill

    Santa Clarita city officials are asking City Council members to request more time from Los Angeles County to evaluate the Chiquita Canyon landfill expansion request, according to the Santa Clarita’s City Council agenda. Santa Clarita staffers are recommending City Council to draft a letter requesting more time due to feedback given from residents at the last meeting.

    Val Verde Residents Ask County For More Time On Landfill Expansion

    A group of Santa Clarita Valley residents who live near a landfill seeking permission from Los Angeles County to expand are asking county officials for more time and more bilingual support to consider the landfill’s expansion. The proposed Chiquita Canyon landfill expansion is undergoing the required public comment period, which is expected to end Sept. 23. The comment deadline has already been extended once, from its original date of Aug. 24.

    Chiquita Canyon's Val Verde Landfill Plan To Be Discussed In Castaic

    Chiquita Canyon landfill expansion plans will be discussed Thursday night at the Castaic Sports Complex, giving Santa Clarita Valley residents having a chance to express concern or support for the proposed expansion landfill’s project. The landfill's proposal, which would double the waste footprint of the facility, has come under criticism from Val Verde residents living near the dump. One Val Verde association claimed dozens have complained, and another group considered the landfill “a good neighbor.”

    Chiquita Canyon Expansion Project Open For Public Comment

    Chiquita Canyon officials are looking to expand their landfill west of Santa Clarita city limits, and the project is currently open for public comment befor a county hearing Aug. 24. The 639-acre landfill site, which is owned by Waste Connections and permitted for about 257 acres of waste, is looking to double its daily disposal limits, set aside of land for a potential conversion technology site, improve its entrance and support facilities and extend the life of the landfill, to name a few of the project’s goals. The landfill is located outside city of Santa Clarita limits about three miles west of the intersection of Interstate 5 and Highway 126. The proposed project will increase the permitted waste footprint within the existing property line by approximately 143 acres by extending it slightly south toward the existing landfill entrance and to the north and east.

    County Board Approves Expansion For Castaic Public Library

    By Summer 2014, the Castaic Public Library will double in size thanks to a decision by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to purchase the existing property in addition to adjacent space previously occupied by two other tenants.
