    Waste Management Workshop To Be Hosted By College Of The Canyons

    College of the Canyons is hosting a workshop for Santa Clarita residents that focuses on medical hazardous waste management.

    The workshop Hazardous Waste Management and Pollution Prevention for Medical and Dental Offices and Hospitals will take place from 9:30 a.m. to noon Friday, Oct. 17, in the Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook University Center, Room 258, located on the college's Valencia campus (University Center Drive entrance).

    Gaby Mendoza, from Ecuador, started at College of the Canyons campus for the first time three years ago with a lack of direction and no social circle to latch onto.

    Those circumstances were only temporary — as with her acceptance to NASA's National Community College Aerospace Scholars (NCAS) program in August, Mendoza confirmed her transformation from awkward newcomer to role model.

    Former Executive Director Of The COC Foundation Dies At 65

    The former Executive Director of the College of the Canyons Foundation, Kathleen Ann Maloney, died at 65 years old on Wednesday, following a long, courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease.

    COC Grad Awarded $7,500 Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship

    A valedictorian of College of the Canyons' 2014 graduating class was one of ten students nationwide chosen to receive the 2014 Phi Theta Kappa Hites Transfer Scholarship award, college officials announced Wednesday.

    Jessie Warme, who is set to attend the University of California at San Diego in the fall, was selected from more than 2,200 applicants to be awarded with the $7,500 scholarship in recognition of outstanding academic achievement of Phi Theta Kappa members.

    UPDATE: Two COC Football Players Killed, One Critically Injured In Crash

    Two College of the Canyons football players were killed Friday in a car crash that also left a third football player in critical condition, college officials confirmed.

    The deceased victims were identified as Isaiah Hastings, 19, of Lancaster, and Alexander Manu, 18, of Reseda. The surviving victim was identified as Eldridge Salguero, 18, of Van Nuys.

    COC Veterans Center Sees Rise In Number Of Student Veterans

    College of the Canyons Adult Reentry and Veterans Center staff are noting a rise in the number of student veterans coming to them for assistance, college officials announced Wednesday.

    Center officials saw about 20 percent more veterans during the 2013-2014 academic year compared to the previous year, bringing their total for the year to more than 1,000 veterans assisted, according to a COC news release.
