Students Go International

Economic summit takes over Canyon High.

This morning, over a hundred students ran around the Canyon High gym in costume, frantically trading fake goods with each other. It was an elaborate game of make-believe, but one that teaches students about globally practiced economic principals.

Students in all of Maria Cooper’s economic classes have been assigned to groups that represent a real-life country. Over the past 11 weeks the groups immersed themselves in their newly found cultures. “They researched the political, economic and the social conditions of that country and determined what was best to improve their standard of living,” Cooper told KHTS. “Once they decided that, then they decided what to import.”

This morning’s exercise was the culmination of all that hard work, as students were racing to trade for what their country needed. And to fully wrap themselves in the experience, groups dressed in their county’s traditional garb and put up displays detailing their nation’s information. Some specific food samples were also part of the display.

At the end of the program, winners were to be chosen.

In addition, several students from the day’s exercise are headed to San Diego on May 20th for the Regional Economic Summit.
