Santa Clarita debuts massive complex.

At 3:30 this afternoon, skaters will have their day.

After months of having no place to go, our city's brand new
skate park at the Santa Clarita sports Complex will be open for business.

The 40,000 square foot park features a massive amount of
goodies for local skaters like a half pipe tunnel, hand rails, stairs, a snake
run, skate-able planters, bowl areas and more. Just about everything inside the
skate park fence is meant to be traversed on a wheeled instrument.

According to the city, another important aspect of the park
is that it was made for, and by the skaters.

"We actually went through a process where the people skate
boarding today helped us design the park," said Mayor Frank Ferry. "So for them
to actually skate what they drew in pictures, it's an exciting day."

Local skaters also helped craft the rules for the park.

The community involvement serves two purposes; to give the
skaters the best experience possible and to create a buy-in from those using the
park.

Image"It's an old teacher trick," Ferry said. "Because kids are
the ones who ultimately drew up the rules, that will allow other people to say ‘ok,
these rules were made by skaters, for skaters,' so and hopefully they'll buy
into them more."

The park opens to the public today at 3:30 p.m. with a giant
kick-off party featuring exhibitions from professional skaters, from the World
Industries, Active and Hydro skate teams. Also, pro skaters like vert ramp
superman Christian Hosoi and Chris Gentry, will be on hand.

Admission to the skate park is free.
