Silver Medals For Bustos And Felix, Day Waiting For Weather To Clear

Local athletes bringing home silver, BMX finals put off by rain.

In a stunning upset, Japan earned the gold medal in women’s softball Thursday morning in Beijing. The final score was 3-1.

Canyon High grad Crystl Bustos scored the USA’s only run in the fourth inning of the game. USA earned the silver medal in the sport, which is being retired from competition this year.

This is the first time Team USA has come home with less than gold from its four Olympic competitions. This is also the first time Japan finished with a gold medal, crowning a Beijing record of 8 wins, 2 losses.

The BMX competition, where front-runner Mike Day could earn his first Olympic gold medal, was postponed because of torrential rain in Beijing that compromised the course. The finals will be held Friday morning.

And Valencian Allyson Felix earned another silver medal with her season best time of 21.93. Jamaican sprinter Veronica Campbell-Brown will take home the gold for her time of 21.74.
