    Charles Helmers Elementary School Earns PTA Student Achievement Award

    On Friday, May 9, 2014, HelmersElementary School was awarded the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Spotlight Award for Student Achievement.  They won this prestigious award from among 5,000 other elementary PTAs in California. The award was based on their FIT TEAM program established in 2004 to create a school fitness experience that would go beyond the state mandated 200 minutes of physical fitness every 10 days. The PTA wanted to offer every child an opportunity to be active in a fun environment.

    New Art Exhibit Now On Display At Old Town Newhall Library

    The City of Santa Clarita recently unveiled a new art exhibit, “Endangered and Endeared: A Retrospective of the Art of Diane Bruckner in Memoriam,” on display through July 11, 2014in the Community Room at the Old Town Newhall Library.  Bruckner was a local artist who won numerous awards for her ability to capture the essence and character of animals and for her depictions of endangered species.

    College Of The Canyons To Present 5th Annual CareerCampSCV

    The College of the Canyons Job & Career Center will present its fifth annual CareerCampSCV event, providing students and community members with a rewarding, educational and extremely interesting day of career-themed speakers and workshops.

    CareerCampSCV will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, July 12, in the Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook University Center, located on the college’s Valencia campus (University Center Drive entrance).

    WorkSource Center Hosts Free Recruitment Event For Several Full-Time Positions

    The Santa Clarita WorkSource Center will host a free recruitment event on Friday, June 20, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for a variety of full-time positions available with B&B Manufacturing. The event will be held at College of the Canyons in Suite 250 at the University Center, located at 26455 Rockwell Canyon Road. 

    Newhall School District Art Show

    The annual Newhall School District Art Show will be held Tuesday, June 10, from 5-8 PM, at ValenciaValleySchool on Carrizo Drive in Valencia.  Student art work from every school will be on display. 

    Visual arts teacher John Fossa has gathered students' favorite art pieces from this school year and gathered them together in one spectacular display for the community to enjoy. There will be thousands of paintings, drawings, sculptures, and models chosen by students as their best creations of the year.  

    Santa Clarita Public Library Presents "Paws To Read" Summer Reading Program

    Readers of all ages are invited to get their paws on books during the dog days of summer as the Santa Clarita Public Library launches the 2014 “Paws to Read” Summer Reading program. Participation is free and online registration begins Monday, June 9, 2014 at SCVSummerReading.com.  The Summer Reading Program runs through July 26.   

    City Seeks Feedback on Public Safety Grant Application

    The City of Santa Clarita is seeking community feedback on a public safety grant proposal for the U.S. Department of Justice’s Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program. All public comments must be received by Friday, June 6, 2013.

    Students Chosen As NASA’s Cassini Scientists For A Day

    Scientists on NASA’s Cassini mission to Saturn have chosen a fresh crop of outstanding essays from students hoping to share the excitement of exploring the planet Saturn.

    Many of the eleven students from across the United States who recently won NASA’s Spring 2014 Cassini Scientist for a Day essay contest weren’t even alive yet in 1997 when the Cassini spacecraft launched from Earth on its seven-year trip to Saturn.

    COC Theatre Department To Present Two Nights Of ‘Solopalooza’

    Featuring two nights of original performances, the College of the Canyons theatre department will present a series of student created one-person shows during the 2014 ‘Solopalooza’ on June 3 and 4.

    “We are proud to once again offer audiences the opportunity to see the impressive level of talent on display here at College of the Canyons,” said Paul Wickline, COC theatre department chair. “The unique collection of pieces our students have written, and will now perform, draw upon many universal themes that all audiences can relate to.”
