Saugus Girls Win Foothill League Basketball Championship

The Saugus girls basketball team earned the Foothill League championship Thursday night with a 50-36 win over Hart. Nicole Hicks scored 16 points to lead Saugus. Canyon had a chance to share the league title with Saugus, but lost by one point to Valencia, 69-68. West Ranch beat Golden 50-37.

Saugus, Valencia and West Ranch, the top three teams in the Foothill League, earned CIF playoff spots.

In boys basketball, Golden Valley got 31 points from Trevor Wiseman and topped West Ranch 84-66 to win its first Foothill League championship outright. Hart beat Saugus, 74-55, and finishes in second place, a game behind Golden Valley. Valencia downed Canyon 73-49.

Golden Valley and Hart will advance to CIF playoffs next week. Valencia finishes in third place in league and will earn an automatic playoff bid.
In girls soccer, Canyon and Valencia will share the Foothill League championship after playing to a scoreless tie. Both teams finished with 7-1-2 records and tied for first in league. Jamie Molacek scored two goals for Saugus in a 2-0 win over Hart.

Canyon will be the top-seeded team from the Foothill League when playoffs begin next week. Canyon beat Valencia, 3-1, on Jan. 27, and has a better head-to-head record against the Vikings. Valencia will be the No. 2 seed and Saugus will be No. 3.

On the boys side, Canyon got four goals from four different players and beat Valencia, 4-2. Saugus beat Hart, 5-1, and West Ranch shut out Golden Valley, 1-0.

Canyon won the Foothill League championship last week Saugus finishes in second place and West Ranch is third.

CIF playoff pairings will be announced Monday.

In college baseball, The Master’s College’s Tyler Diamond hit a two-run home run in the third inning in a 5-4 win over Avila.
