Santa Clarita Christian School’s 2013-2014 girls soccer season – the most successful season in the history of SCCS varsity soccer – came to an end Tuesday night on the field at College of the Canyons.
Facing Gabrielino (San Gabriel), a high school with a senior class more than twice the size the entire SCCS high school student body, the Lady Cardinals lost their first and final game of the season, 4-1 in the CIF-Southern Section Division 7 semifinals.

Before this year, no Cardinal varsity soccer team had ever gotten past the playoff’s second round.
SCCS finished the year with a stellar 19-1-4 record.
The Cardinals’ lone goal came off the foot of Desirae Dodson. Dodson, who along with Shawna Tice and Elissa Phillips, anchored a Cardinal defense that allowed only eight goals all season before Tuesday night, scored on a direct kick early in the second half to put SCCS back in the game, 2-1.
Gabrielino (16-5-1) struck back quickly, however, converting on a corner kick to regain the momentum.
The Cardinals fought valiantly, but could not overcome the Eagles’ superior size and depth.
With a trip to the CIF finals so tantalizingly close, the loss was a bitter pill to swallow for the SCCS faithful, especially for the players.
But history will vindicate the efforts of this unique blend of talent and hard work that has been SCCS girls soccer this season. They were undefeated and largely un-scored upon. They dazzled on offense and knew how to clamp down on defense. They were relentless, and by all of their opponents, they were respected.
They earned that.
The numbers are staggering: 19 wins, one loss, four ties, 149 goals scored to 12 goals allowed.
They didn’t make it to the CIF title game. This is true.
What they did make was history.
