Santa Clarita Sports: Santa Clarita Update September 18, 2014

The Saugus boys and girls cross country teams are entered in the Woodbridge Invitational at Great Park in Irvine this weekend.

The Saugus boys and girls teams are ranked No. 1 in the CIF Southern Section Division 2 polls.

No school has won both the boys and girls sweepstakes races since 2003.

Saugus won four girls sweepstakes championships in a row from 2006-2009. The Saugus boys have yet to win a sweepstakes championship at the Woodbridge Invitational.

The West Ranch, Canyon and Valencia cross country teams are also entered in the Woodbridge Invitational.

In girls volleyball, the annual Saugus tournament begins Friday night with pool play.

Saugus and Canyon are entered in the tournament. Alta Loma won the tournament last year and is back to reclaim the title.

In girls golf, Canyon lost to Alemany by 51 strokes at the Balboa Golf Course in Encino.

Sabrina Senff shot the low round for Canyon, a 12-over 50.

In the major leagues, the Dodgers lost to the Rockies, 16-2. The Rockies scored eight runs in the first inning off Dodgers starter Carlos Frias.

The Dodgers dropped two of three games against the Rockies. Meanwhile the Giants beat the Diamondbacks, 4-2, and cut the Dodgers lead in the National League West standings to two games.

The Dodgers are in Chicago to start a weekend series against the Cubs tonight. Zack Greinke starts for the Dodgers against Tsuyoshi Wada for the Cubs.
