Santa Clarita Sports: Santa Clarita Update September 03, 2014

The Hart and Valencia football teams are ranked in the CIF Southern Section West Valley Division top 10. But both teams dropped in the polls after the first week of the season.

Hart dropped from No. 3 to No. 5 after losing to Chino Hills in the opening week of high school football.

Valencia dropped a spot to No. 6 and didn’t even play in the opening week.

Valencia opens against Palmdale on Friday night.

In high school volleyball, two teams from the Santa Clarita Valley are ranked in the CIF Southern Section preseason polls.

The Valencia girls are ranked No. 5 in the Southern Section Division 1A poll. Aliso Niguel is the No. 1 team in Division 1A.

The Santa Clarita Christian girls are ranked No. 2 in the Southern Section Division 5AA poll. La Sierra Academy is the No. 1 team in the Division 5AA poll.

In college soccer, The Master’s College women lost to MidAmerica Nazarene, 2-1.

The Lady Mustangs, ranked No. 18 in the NAIA, dropped to 2-2.

In the major leagues, the Dodgers beat the Nationals, 4-1. Clayton Kershaw won his 17th game of the season and lowered his ERA to 1.70. He struck out eight and gave up one run on three hits in eight innings.

Game 3 of the series against the Nationals is tonight. Carlos Frias is making his first start for the Dodgers against Jordan Zimmerman for the Nationals.

First pitch is at 12:10.
