Santa Clarita Sports: Santa Clarita Update September 02, 2014

Santa Clarita Christian quarterback Jonathan Saavedra opened the high school football season in record-setting fashion.

He accounted for nine touchdowns, seven passing and two rushing, in his team’s 68-20 win over Lutheran High of Chula Vista.

Saavedra passed for 529 yards and seven touchdowns, both school records. Four of his touchdown passes went to Cameron Lewis.

It wasn’t such a stellar opening for the teams in the Foothill League. They went 2-3 in the opening weekend of high school football. The two teams that won were a bit of a surprise.

West Ranch opened with a convincing 42-14 win over San Marcos. Golden Valley beat Granada Hills, 45-17.

Hart, the reigning CIF Southern Section Northern Division champion, lost on the road to Chino Hills, 63-48.

Hart was moved into the West Valley Division and is ranked No. 3. The Indians blew a 21-point lead in the game against Chino Hills, which also plays in the West Valley Division.

Canyon was crushed by Westlake, 44-17.

Saugus lost a heartbreaker to Simi Valley, 48-44, at College of the Canyons.

In auto racing, Dylan Lupton won the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West race at Kern County Raceway Park in Bakersfield.

Canyon High graduate Greg Pursley, the leader in the K&N Pro Series West standings, was ninth. Santa Clarita’s Rich DeLong III was 16th.

Eric Richardson won the NASCAR Citgo Late Models race.  Brock Thompson won the Spec Mods race.

In the major leagues, the Dodgers lost to the Nationals, 6-4.
