Santa Clarita Sports: Santa Clarita Update June 26, 2014

Valencia High’s Devin Davis is taking the road trip of a lifetime.

Davis was selected to participate in the Major League Baseball Junior Select Home Run Derby in Minneapolis next month.

The Junior Home Run Derby is part of the Major League Baseball All Star game festivities at Target Field, home of the Minnesota Twins.

Davis will join nine of the top baseball players in the nation invited to the home run derby.

In high school basketball, Valencia hired Chad Phillips, the former coach at Canyon High, according to a report in The Signal.

Phillips won three Foothill League titles between 2001 and 2012. He resigned as the Canyon coach after the 2012 season.

He replaces Rocket Collins, who was the coach of the Valencia boys basketball team for 13 seasons. Collins won four Foothill League championships, reached the playoffs 12 times and won 244 games as coach of the Vikings.

In soccer, the Santa Clarita Blue Heat takes on the LA Blues tonight at The Master’s College.

The Blue Heat is coming off a 2-1 loss to the Seattle Sounders. They are 3-4 in the USL W-League.

Kickoff is at 8:30.

Los Angeles Sports News

In the major leagues, the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Kansas City Royals, 5-4. Matt Kemp hit a home run in the second inning. Dee Gordon had four hits and stole his National League leading 40th base.

Hart High graduate James Shields took the loss. He gave up four runs on seven hits in seven innings.

The Dodgers took two of three games against the Royals.

The Dodgers start a four-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals tonight at Dodger Stadium. Josh Beckett starts for the Dodgers against Adam Wainright for the Cardinals.
