Santa Clarita Sports: Santa Clarita Update June 09, 2014

In baseball, seven players who played in high school or college in the Santa Clarita Valley were selected in the Major League Baseball First-Year player draft.

Valencia High graduate and UCLA junior Shane Zeile was the first player from the Santa Clarita Valley selected. He went in the fifth round to the Detroit Tigers.

Zeile, the nephew of former Dodger and Hart High graduate Todd Zeile, won an NCAA national championship as the starting catcher for UCLA.

Pitcher Andrew Rohrbach was picked by the Colorado Rockies in the ninth round. He was on the College of the Canyons baseball team and the ace of the Long Beach State staff.

Five players from the College of the Canyons were selected in the draft.

Roberto Ramos was taken in the 16th round by the Rockies.

Ivan Vela was picked by the Dodgers in the 21st round.

Steven Farnworth, who also played at West Ranch, was taken in the 23rd round by the Miami Marlins.

COC pitcher Ryan Cruz was taken by the San Francisco Giants in the 29th round.

Brennan Bernardino, who played at Valencia High School and Cal State Dominguez Hills, was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 26th round.

In golf, Valencia High graduate Alison Lee won the Curtis Cup with the United States team against Great Britain and Ireland at St. Louis Country Club.

The United States won the Curtis Cup, 13-7.

Lee, a sophomore at UCLA and the No. 2 ranked amateur in the world, went 2-1-1 in her four matches.

In auto racing, David Mayhew won the NASCAR Late Models race at Kern County Raceway Park in Bakersfield. It was his third win in a row in the Late Models at the track.

Los Angeles Sports Report

Call them the overlords of overtime. The Los Angeles Kings are up 2-0 in the Stanley Cup Finals against the New York Rangers. The first two games of the series went into overtime. The Kings won both games coming back from two-goal deficits.

Game 3 is tonight in New York. The Kings are coming off a 5-4, double overtime win on Saturday.

Listen to the game on AM 1220 KHTS. The puck drops at 5.

In the major leagues, the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Colorado Rockies, 6-1, in a shortened game.

The Dodgers scored four runs in the sixth inning to take a five-run lead. Hanley Ramirez hit his 10th homerun of the season.

The game was called after the sixth inning because of severe weather, rain, lightning and thunder.

The Dodgers are off to Cincinnati to start a series against the Reds.

Dan Haren starts for the Dodgers against Tony Cingrani for the Reds. First pitch is at 4.
