Santa Clarita Sports: Santa Clarita Update July 23, 2014

The Saugus baseball team beat Hart, 8-3, in the semifinals of the Valley Invitational Baseball League playoffs.

Saugus scored five runs in the first inning. Rudy Aguilar capped the inning with a two-run home run.

Saugus will play El Camino Real in the championship game on Thursday.

The Master’s College keeps adding talent to its men’s basketball team.

The latest player to join the team is Evan Jenkins, a sophomore point guard transferring for Cal State San Bernardino.

The Etiwanda High School graduate averaged 10 points and six assists in his freshman season at Cal State San Bernardino.

The Master’s College men’s basketball season begins in November against La Sierra College.

In the major leagues, the Dodgers lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates, 12-7. The Pirates hit three home runs in the game, all off Dodgers starter Josh Beckett.

The Pirates scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to extend a one-run lead.

Adrian Gonzalez hit his 15th home run of the season, a two-run shot in the seventh inning. Scott Van Slyke hit his ninth homer, a solo blast in the eighth inning.

The Dodgers and Pirates wrap up their series today. Dan Haren starts for the Dodgers against Francisco Liriano for the Pirates.

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood.
