Santa Clarita Sports: Santa Clarita Update August 05, 2014

Dan Hurst won race No. 4 in the College of the Canyons Cross Country Series. He completed the course in 16 minutes, 28.1 seconds.

Edwardo Vasquez was second in the men’s race, followed by Garrett Valadez in third.

Elaine Woodward won the women’s race in 19 minutes, 4.8 seconds.

Jenay Jauregui was second and 14-year-old Kaylee Thompson was third.

The fifth race in the COC Cross Country Series is Thursday.

In high school volleyball, the Valencia girls won the third-place match over Thousand Oaks in the Oxnard Summer Invitational.

The Valencia girls swept Thousand Oaks in the gold division third-place match.

They lost to Lakewood in four games in the semifinal match.

In the major leagues, the Dodgers lost to the Angels, 5-0, in the first game of the Freeway Series at Dodger Stadium.

The Angels scored four runs in the first inning off Dodgers starter Zack Greinke. Josh Hamilton hit a solo home run in the sixth inning.

The Dodgers collected only five hits, all singles, in the game.

Game 2 of the Freeway Series is tonight at Dodger Stadium. Clayton Kershaw starts for the Dodgers against Hector Santiago for the Angels

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood.
