    Castaic House Fire May Be Hate Crime

    Fire looked intentionally set.


    A house fire in Castaic was suspected to be arson and might be ahate crime, sheriff’s officials said.

    Arson investigators were on the scene at 28265 Parker Roadthroughout the day Saturday, according to Lt. Larry Gump of theSanta Clarita sheriff’s station.

    The structure, a single family residence with a small attachment,was 20 percent burned when firefighters responded just before noon.Gump said it was apparent that the fire was intentionally set.

    The 11th annual Newsmakers Awards were held Friday night andMayor Bob Kellar came out a winner as Newsmaker of the Year.

    The event, a fundraiser for the Randy Wicks First AmendmentScholarship Program, honors names in the news in a variety ofcategories. Over the last decade, the program has granted 48scholarships to graduating high school students and helped 8students at College of the Canyons.

    Deputies patrolling Scherzinger Lane in Canyon Country on Fridaynight detected a strong smell of marijuana coming from an emptyhouse and subsequently confiscated 20 high-quality plants.

    Rescued Animals Available For Adoption in Saugus on Saturday

    Dogs, puppies and cats looking for new owners after abusivestart.


    More than 50 dogs and 30 cats found will be up for adoption from10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Canine Country Club in BouquetCanyon. The adoption event is being coordinated by the Gentle Barn,which helped rescue the dogs and cats kept in abusive and unhealthyconditions on a compound in the desert near Lancaster.
