    The Canyon Cowboys defeated the Hart Indians 21-13 to win the 2005 CIF-Southern Section Division II Championship.  Tyler Hawkins, first team All-Foothill League selection as a linebacker, blocked a Hart extra point to lead the Cowboys defense.

    Maintenance Approved for Pico Canyon Road

    To provide the best possible service to the public in a cost-effective manner, a contract with Alma Gardening Company will include monthly landscape maintenance services along the Pico Canyon Road Median, announced Mayor Michael D. Antonovich. The maintenance will cover the Pico Canyon Road Median from approximately 170 feet west of Whispering Oaks Road to Stevenson Ranch Parkway in the Santa Clarita Valley. 

    Pinecrest School Donates More than 600 Toys for CHP Drive

    Dozens of students clapped and cheered as California Highway Patrol officers made an appearance at Pinecrest School in Valencia on Monday and carted away hundreds of gifts the children had donated to the CHP’s toy drive. Pincerest’s 225 students collected more than 600 toys for the drive, said Judy James a teacher and Student Council advisor with the school. In addition, the teachers, staff and student council bought six bicycles for the children.

    Race for Council to Begin Monday

    In addition to the nomination of a new mayor tonight and the city’s 18th birthday this weekend, the race for the 2006 Santa Clarita City Council election begins this month. Three seats on the City Council need to be filled for next year and the filing period for interested residents opens Monday. Incumbents Frank Ferry, Marsha McLean and Laurene Weste are completing their four year term. The filing period closes Jan. 13 and the Election will be held April11. The Elected council members will be sworn into office April 25.

    Bus Evacuated After Noxious Vapor Released

    More than a dozen passengers were overcome by fumes on a Santa Clarita Transit bus Monday afternoon when someone reportedly released a noxious vapor inside the vehicle. Of the 40 passengers on the bus, 18 were treated for irritated eyes and coughing, said sheriff’s Lt. Brenda Cambra. Three of the injured passengers, who are underage, were transported to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital. Cambra said they were taken to the hospital because there were no adults to whom they could have been released.
     

    Gasoline Prices Continue Spiral Downward

    Continuing a steady decline that began mid-October, gasoline prices have hit a recent new low in Santa Clarita, averaging $2.263 for a gallon of regular unleaded at neighborhood stations.  However, this is still higher than last year’s early December average of 2.093, according to a survey conducted for The Signal by Randy Cressall, owner of the Valencia Chevron AutoSpa. Information from the Automobile Club of Southern California attributes the decline, in part, to increased oil production, forecasts for a mild East Coast winter and lower seasonal demand.

    Celebrating SCV History

    Sunday signaled the 30th anniversary of the Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society, and the Heritage Junction Historical Park was home to the celebration. Inside the wooden former train station, next to William S. Hart Park in Newhall, near the many historical displays that line the museum inside, members of the society and local history buffs gathered for an afternoon of recognition for the group that has as its objective educating local residents of the valley’s rich history.
