Sarah Alarid, Jaime M. Arias, Eric Gilhooley, Dakota DeMott and Derek Millsap are five names which serve as reminders to Santa Clarita Valley teens about the value of safe driving.

White ribbons with these names on them will be given to graduating seniors as a reminder of the five teenagers whose lives were claimed by traffic collisions during the last six years.

“It is our hope that our program is prompting teens to pay attention and improve their driving habits,” said a spokesman from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. “We believe our White Ribbon Campaign is making a difference.”

The White Ribbon Campaign was started in 1997.

The campaign was started over the large number of teenagers who lost their lives due to traffic collisions.

There were 24 names of students who lost their lives between 2001 and 2006 on the ribbons for the class of 2006.

The class of 2013 has the names of students who lost their lives from 2006 to 2013.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is asking graduating seniors to wear the ribbons during their graduation ceremony in honor of those who lost their lives.

The White Ribbon Campaign is a part of the Drive Safe Program, introduced by Frontier Toyota.

Frontier Toyota’s Drive Safe Program is assisted by Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, Safe Rides, the City of Santa Clarita, and The Signal.

Local residents who would like to support the White Ribbon Campaign can pick up their own free white ribbon from Frontier Toyota, Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, Santa Clarita City Hall, and The Signal.
