There have been three serious collisions on freeways near the Santa Clarita Valley recently, resulting in at least 18 injuries, two deaths and several criminal charges.

Bradford E. Pate, 38, of Burbank, was charged with two counts of murder and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and DUI causing injury on Tuesday, after he drove south into northbound traffic on Highway 14 on Saturday, killing two people.

Rick Allen Walker, 54, of Canyon Country, pleaded not guilty to four counts of DUI causing injury on Thursday, after the wrong way crash on Highway 14 that injured 11 people on Monday, June 17.

Deputies are still looking for the driver in a hit-and-run collision on the southbound I-5, that caused a van to roll several times and injured seven people on Wednesday.

Several suspects who initially fled the crime scene this week were nabbed by deputies after containment was set up.

Four suspects were arrested on Tuesday, after an alleged burglary in Castaic that led to a down the southbound I-5 into Valencia. Jumua Jaihad Zhaytoon, 20, of Victorville was found hiding in a trashcan. Rafiki Ras Smith, 18, of Los Angeles and Kiyon H Hodges, 23, of Los Angeles were found hiding in an empty jacuzzi. A fourth unnamed suspect was also arrested.

Scott Barrowclough, 38, of Canyon Country was arrested Thursday morning after deputies received a call at 12:15 a.m. that he had threatened to kill his girlfriend with a knife. Deputies closed portions of Sierra Highway that morning until they found Barrowclough at 8 a.m.

Deputies also responded to a possible stabbing in Canyon Country on Wednesday. The call turned into an officer involved fight before several people were detained.

The Sheriff Station also made an effort to educate residents this week, as a proactive way to keep the community safe.

Despite a decline in motorcycle fatalities, Sheriff’s Department officials released a report on Wednesday, promoting the importance of riding safely and encouraging motorists to be properly licensed before getting on a motorcycle.

The Sheriff’s Juvenile Team held a panel on Wednesday, hosted by Action Family Counseling, that helped parents to understand teen trends, hangouts and social activities.

A Nixle report was released Thursday with helpful tips and warnings on dealing with extreme heat, including staying hydrated and remaining indoors.

Below are reports from the different Sheriff zone’s throughout the Santa Clarita Valley.

The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station divides its coverage into five zones for the Nixle reports. They are listed below alphabetical order.

Here’s a summary of incidents that took place in the last week in Santa Clarita (If your zone isn’t listed, keep checking back for updates):

Canyon Country east

This week in Canyon Country-East we had 12 Part-1 crimes. Of those reported crimes, there was 1 assault, 3 burglaries, 7 larcenies, 1 stolen vehicle.

An assault occurred from the 16700 block of Tiara Ct. A father and son got into a verbal argument after the father kicked his son out of the house. They both agreed to “fight it out like men.” After the fight the father drove himself to Henry Mayo Hospital and was treated for a head laceration.

A residential burglary occurred from the 17800 block of Deanna Lane. The kitchen window was pried open and jewelry was stolen from the bedroom. A witness saw a male running from the area. The investigation is ongoing. A residential burglary occurred from the 27300 block of Fahren Court. A safe containing personal items were stolen from inside the residence. No forced entry was seen.

A grand theft occurred from Sand Canyon and Soledad Canyon Road. During an argument with a friend, the suspect drove off with $1000 worth of electronics that belonged to the victim. The suspect refused to return the property.

A petty theft occurred from the Vons store. The suspect was arrested for shoplifting. A petty theft occurred from the 27900 block of Solamint Road. A car antenna was stolen from a vehicle that was parked in the carport. A vehicle burglary occurred from the 30200 block of Sunrose Place between June 21st, 6:00 p.m. – June 22, 10:30 Hrs. The front passenger window was smashed and a laptop was stolen.

Proactive deputies conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle in the Target parking lot. It was discovered the suspect was in possession of a bag containing stolen items from Target. He was also in possession of narcotics. A shoplifting occurred from the Target store. The video surveillance shows a male walking out of with property without paying for it. A grand theft occurred from the 27300 block of Red Bud Place. The victim believes workers, who entered her apartment to clean the carpet, may have stolen her rings.

Continue to lock your windows, garage doors and make sure to also lock your vehicles.

Canyon Country west

This past week in Zone 7, the following Part-1 Crimes occurred:

(2) Residential Burglaries, (4) Commercial Burglaries, (4) Vehicle Burglaries, (3) Shoplifts, (1) Grand Theft, (3) Petty Theft and (1) Grand Theft Auto.

A hot prowl burglary occurred near the 28100 block of Langside Avenue. The suspect attempted to pry open the rear sliding glass door of the residence. The suspect fled the scene when the victim began yelling at him.

A burglary occurred near the 19500 block of Delight Street. An unknown suspect entered the residence through a garage window and a rear bedroom window. Taken during the burglary was jewelry and electronic items.

A commercial burglary occurred near the 19400 block of Stillmore Street. An unknown suspect shattered a classroom window with a rock and attempted to pry open a file cabinet. It was unknown if anything was taken. The incident is currently under investigation by Santa Clarita Station Detectives.

Another burglary occurred near the 27100 block of Sierra Highway. Suspect(s) unknown pried open the rear door to the location. A safe was taken during the incident.

There were four window smash vehicle burglaries that occurred near Fanchon Lane and Flo Lane. All incidents occurred during the early morning hours of Tuesday 06-18-13. There is no suspect information at this time.

Two male suspects were arrested for shoplift/burglary near the 19400 block of Soledad Canyon Road. The suspects attempted to return stolen items which they took off of the store shelves. The suspects were subsequently arrested by responding deputies.

A suspect was arrested near the 18600 block of Via Princessa. The suspect was detained by loss prevention personnel after removing electronic items and stuffing them in his pants. The suspect was arrested by responding deputies.

A 1995 Honda Civic was taken from the Metrolink parking lot located at the intersection of Weyerhaeuser Way and Via Princessa.

Newhall

This week Newhall (Zone 6) saw eight part one crimes. Newhall had three petty thefts, two commercial burglaries, two robberies, and one arson were reported. 

On Tuesday, 06/16/13 a petty theft of vehicle parts was reported. A front grill, an antenna, and a driver’s side windshield wiper was allegedly stolen from the 24300 block of La Glorita Circle, Newhall (ref -08255). 

A commercial burglary was reported from the 23900 block of Lyons Avenue. A glass door was shattered and unknown amount of US currency was stolen (ref -08267). 

A commercial burglary was reported from the 23600 Newhall Avenue. A front glass door was smashed and US currency was stolen (ref -08285). 

An armed robbery was reported from the 23400 block of Newhall Avenue on Saturday, 06/22/13. This incident occurred at approximately 7:40 p.m. Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station detectives are still currently investigating this incident. Local media did a story on the incident including Newhall crime statistics.

A tailgate from a 2005 Ford F-150 truck was reported stolen from the 20400 block of Newhall Avenue (ref -08424). 

An arson was reported from the campus of Newhall Elementary School on the night of Monday, 06/17/13. A 50 gallon plastic trash can was burned with possible fireworks. Sheriff’s Arson/Explosives detectives are investigating the incident (ref – 08235).

Saugus

This week in Saugus we saw a slight increase in reported Part-1 crimes. There were four crimes reported which is still below the average as compared to this time last year. There were two related commercial burglaries which occurred in the 23000 block of Soledad Canyon Road on Monday, 06/17/13. The first burglary occurred when a male black adult (30-35 years old) entered a closed business, through an open rear door, and stole miscellaneous items from the cash register area. He exited through the rear door and entered a second business. While inside the business he walked to the back and stole an unknown amount of money contained in an envelope. He then exited through the back door. Detectives are following up on leads to these two related incidents.

There was a residential burglary in the 28300 block of Alaminos Drive on Tuesday, 06/18/13. The victim said he left his I-Pod in his open garage while he went in the house for approximately 30 minutes. When he returned he noticed it had been stolen.

There was a petty theft in the 22500 block of Pamplico Drive sometime within the past three months. The victim believes an acquaintance stole miscellaneous electrical equipment from his bedroom.
