This empowering Santa Clarita Valley event gives local women a chance to join forces to build veteran homes in their local community.

Led by the 2013 Chairwoman Cheri Fleming, owner of Valencia Acura and president-elect  of Soroptomist International, Women Empowerment Build encourages volunteers to make a difference and provides an opportunity for women to learn construction techniques in a supportive environment.

The purpose of the WE Build will be to begin to engage Habitat for Humanity female family members who are going to receive homes and female community members in an empowering day of working together towards the common goal of building Habitat for Humanity SF/SCV’s new Habitat for Heroes Veteran community in Santa Clarita and Sylmar.

This year’s lunchtime speakers will include Lindsay Rhodes Host/Anchor/Reporter from the NFL Network, Millie Diaz Taylor, a WWII Navy Nurse and Gold Star Mother, and Sharon Langenbeck, Ph.D., retired Section Manager for Mechanical Engineering at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and active member of Zonta International.

They, along with WE Build Chair Cheri Fleming and Santa Clarita Mayor Pro-tem Laurene Weste, will be speaking about their experience in non-traditional roles in their careers.

Santa Clarita City Council member Marsha McLean will also be there to do the safety briefing and warm-up.

KHTS AM 1220 radio show host Janice Murray will also be there to provide empowering music for the event throughout the day.

This year will also be a very special one as this tradition will also honor our female veterans, widows of the fallen, and those who have persevered despite tragic losses incurred during wartime.

In addition to our speakers, there will be a special WWII veteran who exemplifies women in the armed forces.

Registration for this event is $35 per person and includes a t-shirt and pink hard hat for each participant, continental breakfast, sponsor fair, safety briefing, building assignments, build, lunch and speakers, training and competitions.

The event will be held off-site from where the homes are being built, but participants will be building elements of the neighborhood that will later go into the 87-home community in Santa Clarita and 12-home community in Sylmar.

Sponsorship opportunities are still available.

Habitat for Humanity SF/SCV hopes that you join the Women Build this year, Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at parking lot 8 on Valencia Boulevard at College of the Canyons in Valencia.

To register for the event, go to www.HumanityCA.org/ourevents or contact Brittany at (818) 884-8808 or Bengh@HumanityCA.org.

About Habitat for Humanity SF/SCV
Habitat for Humanity San Fernando/Santa Clarita Valleys (SF/SCV) was founded in 1990 as an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI).

They are a locally run, independent, 501(c)3 non-profit organization serving North Los Angeles City and County, building houses for low-income working and veteran families.

To date, they have built, rebuilt or repaired more than 220 homes and are among the top 5 percent of Habitat affiliates nationwide.

Habitat for Humanity SF/SCV will be building 100 new homes for veterans in two “enriched” neighborhoods over the next few years in collaboration with the California Department of Veteran Affairs.

These will be 87 three- and four-bedroom homes on Centre Pointe in Santa Clarita and 12- four-bedroom homes in Sylmar on Foothill Boulevard.

These homes will answer not only local affordable housing needs for low-income veterans, but Habitat will also provide what they call “Enrichment” Services to their families before and after move in to teach these important life skills. Services in the program include connecting families with other organizations, social services and nonprofits that provide: financial literacy workshops, health education and screenings, homework help for the children, computer training, PTSD, counseling, and veteran-specific services.

Habitat for Humanity SF/SCV is still collecting applications for this low-income veteran-specific community and their other 12-home veteran community being built in Sylmar. To apply for one of these homes visit www.HumanityCA.org or call (818) 884-8808.
