Newhall Avenue Delays Expected Due To Gas Main Work

Delays were expected on Newhall Avenue beginning at 4 a.m. Saturday and continuing through 4 a.m. Sunday as the Southern California Gas Company performs work on a gas main, officials announced.

One lane in each direction is scheduled to remain open along Newhall Avenue between Pine St. and Valle Del Oro during construction.

“The pipeline replacement is part of a new program called the Pipeline Safety Enhancement Plan, or PSEP,” said Angela Fentiman, spokeswoman for the Southern California Gas Company.

In 2011, the California Public Utilities Commission, which regulates all natural gas transmission operators in the state, ordered the development of an Implementation Plan that would test or replace all natural gas transmission pipelines that had not been pressure-tested, according to their website.

The primary objectives of the PSEP are to enhance public safety, comply with the Commission’s directive, minimize customer impacts and maximize cost-effectiveness, officials said.

The Newhall Avenue project began in late March, months before the proposed PSEP to implement the directives made by the Commission was approved in June 2014.

“This is the final phase of this segment, but more work will be done in the Santa Clarita area in the following months,” said Fentiman. “All members of the community will benefit from this project. We have several programs to help maintain the safety of our systems through replacement work and we want to make sure people are able to shower and cook their meals.”

In an attempt to make sure all their systems are up to date, work is currently being done not only in the Santa Clarita area, but the entire SoCal Gas Company territory, which covers approximately 20,000 square miles, officials said.

“While SoCal Gas is proud of our safety and reliability achievements thus far, we will not become complacent and will challenge ourselves to be even more diligent in maintaining the overall safety of our pipeline system and infrastructure,” reads a statement on their website.
