UPDATE: Two Arrested After CHP Pull Person Out Of Burning Vehicle Following Fiery Crash On 5 Freeway In Newhall

UPDATE: Two people have been arrested after an officer with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) pulled one person out of a burning vehicle following a fiery crash in Newhall Wednesday evening.

UPDATE (11:55 p.m.): Officials with the California Highway Patrol have confirmed that two people were taken into custody in relation with the fiery crash on Wednesday evening.

The incident began after a CHP officer made an enforcement stop on a vehicle on northbound 5 Freeway, north of Gavin Canyon.

“As the officer exited his vehicle and made an approach on the suspect vehicle (occupied by two), the driver rapidly accelerated back into traffic,” wrote Officer Josh Greengard in a statement Wednesday night. “As he emerged from a blind sweeping right hand turn, which was just north of the location of the traffic stop, he saw a large fireball, which stemmed from a collision of the suspect and two victim vehicles.”

After one of the victims’ vehicle erupted in flames, the CHP officer reportedly “broke out the victims driver side window and rescued the solo female occupant from her vehicle,” according to Greengard.

“She sustained possible severe injuries,” he wrote. “The officer sustained minor injuries.”

The two suspects were then taken into custody at the scene. The driver, 23-year-old Shaquille Anthony Taylor, was taken into custody and booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station on one felony charge of evading causing injury, according to officials.

Original Post: Just after 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, officials with the Los Angeles County Fire Department received reports of a vehicle on fire on the northbound I-5 Freeway just north of Calgrove Boulevard, according to Supervisor Pickett with the department.

Looks like it was a car accident with a car on fire,” Picket said, “CHP pulled a patient out of a burning vehicle.”

A SIG-Alert was issued for all northbound lanes of the 5 Freeway in the area for an unknown duration at 6:55 p.m.

Officials were still on scene as of 6:55 p.m. Wednesday.

The exact condition of the transported individual was unknown as of Wednesday evening.

  1. Accident was caused by a person who sped away after being pulled over by CHP. The person drove 100+ on shoulder and caused collision of multiple cars, one car exploded into a large ball of fire and ended up in center divider as well as other cars.

  2. I witnessed the accident. Erika is correct, he originally was pulled over after reckless driving on the I-5 going north. Then this guy took off running from the CHP traveling at speeds of well greater than 100+ on the right shoulder where he passed me. With nowhere to go after coming up to the Calgrove exit, he drove directly into traffic crashing into multiple vehicles and then crashed into the center divider. The car that was cut in half by being hit from behind then burst into flames. It was outrageous.

  3. It was a sedan car burnt down to ground. No way you could tell the make or model.

  4. I was there about 100 yards behind when yheccrash happened. Simply horrific. I wsnted to stop and help the officer but was in shock. I watched as he CV uffed the guy and then broke the window to pull the lady out. Thst officer is a HERO!

    • Drove past the accident after being stuck behind it for over an hour. I knew it had to be bad. I had no clue until we drove past and saw the wreckage and the burnt car. My heart sunk and thought whomever was in the burnt car was gone. No way they survived that. When I read that the CHP had pulled her out I was so emotional. Thank God the officer was so brave , he is definitely a hero and so relieved I was wrong about no survivors. It’s good to be wrong sometimes.
Crazy dumb drivers put everyone else in danger. I had an 6 hour drive ahead of me and was more cautious then normal. Thank CHP officer.

  5. Mr. Shaqille You should use your black slavery money reparation funds to give to this poor white lady you almost burned to death. I don’t feel sorry for you. Play the system and you. Will be the hero. I was running from those racist cops and was frightened they would enslave me. You’ll be fine not to worry, boy, you’es in California.

  6. Youth gone astray, a good kid with potential who couldn’t see his light. Was drawn to the fast life. He wasnt a bad kid just listen just followed the wrong path now his daughter will be with out her father.
