Suzanne Harper Wins Local Finals Of The Texaco Country Showdown

The 2013 Texaco Country Showdown winner at Concerts in the Park was Suzanne Harper. On Saturday night she competed against Marie Wise-Hawkins and Band and Bourbon County to move on to the Knott’s Berry Farm California State Finals.

The Texaco Country Showdown is the biggest country music talent search in America. Thousands of aspiring artists compete in local rounds trying to become the next Jason Aldean, Martina McBride, Garth Brooks, Miranda Lambert, Neal McCoy, Sara Evans, and Billy Ray Cyrus who all launched their careers by winning the Texaco Country Showdown.

Following in the footsteps of Poor Man’s Poison, Suzanne Harper will be advancing to the State Finals at Knott’s Berry Farm on Saturday, August 17 at 7 P.M.

Poor Man’s Poison, the band that started locally last year, was sponsored by KHTS for the Texaco Country Showdown. The band advanced to the National Finals in Nashville, Tenn. at the historic Ryman Auditorium. There they competed amongst four other finalists from across the U.S. Poor Man’s Poison won the competition, receiving $100,000 and the title “Best New Act in Country Music.”

Suzanne Harper is hoping to have the same success as Poor Man’s Poison as she advances toward the California State Finals.

Upon winning, Harper was “so excited for just the chance to be on that journey [toward the Title].”

Suzanne Harper is a California native, hailing from North San Diego County, in the countryside of Valley Center. There she learned to sing, play guitar, and fell in love with country music. She has many notable performances including one with Sugarland. Harper continues to expand her music career with her band Talk Like June. She has over 70 pieces of original material with a broad range from pop to country to rock.

She aspires to be like country artists Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood with their songs that contain lots of passion and personality on stage as a spunky, spirited country singer.

Harper claims to have a “California Country style, with heavy guitars.”

She has been performing for awhile but said that she had been, “actively pursuing [her career in country music] for two to three years and playing in a band a lot longer than that, but really trying hard maybe the last two years or so.”

She did not seem too nervous to be performing as she continually joked on stage and seemed genuinely happy to be at the event.

Being a mother of two daughters she says that, “they really do give me a lot of inspiration, they are the reason I want to work so hard to be successful so I can support them.”

The event at the City of Santa Clarita’s Concerts in the Park this past weekend was a close call between all of the artists, but the judges voted that Suzanne Harper stood out most. She was the only one without a band and performed first out of all the competitors. After taking a picture of the crowd, she began her performance and people were up front dancing along.

To prepare for the next round of the Texaco Country Showdown, the California State Finals, Harper will be getting a lot of sleep and vocal rest. She hinted that her next performance may even include a live backing band.

Be sure to check Suzanne Harper out at the Wagon Camp at Knott’s Berry Farm on August 17 at 7 P.M. Admission is free for the State Final of the Texaco Country Showdown with park admission which runs as low as $37.99 on knotts.com.
