Several ongoing investigations, a garage theft and a scam trying to raise money for a fake College of the Canyons newspaper kept Santa Clarita Sheriff’s deputies busy this week. They continue their efforts to keep residents informed and protect our valley.

Two dozen 13 to 17 year olds gathered at the Sheriff’s Station on Monday for an emergency preparedness workshop as part of the station’s Youth Activity League.

Deputies are investigating an assault that occurred last week on Hillsborough Parkway in Valencia, when a resident got into an argument with a group setting off fireworks near his home.

A 25-year-old Santa Clarita man was caught on camera burglarizing a Valencia garage, Tuesday. Deputies identified him as Belden Robinette-Faulk, and there is a warrant out for his arrest.

Whites Canyon Road was shut down between Nadal Street and Ranier Street for several hours Wednesday morning, so that deputies could investigate a collision between a San Gabriel Police motorcycle officer and another vehicle. The officer was in serious, but stable condition, and the other party sustained no significant injuries.

Deputies are currently seeking a Newhall man, who fled when they attempted to contact him on Wednesday. He may have had a gun in his waistband, but deputies were unsure.

College of the Canyons warned residents this week to be wary of solicitors going door-to-door pretending to raise money for the college’s newspaper. The scam happens almost every year, but COC has not had a newspaper for several years.

Several Santa Clarita residents were in court this week. The cases are ongoing for Eric and Roger Yee, Raymundo Soto, Jerry Moon, Yale Yurman and Diamonte Jerome McGhee, Branden Trevaughn Higgs and Eric Michael Edwards.

Father and son Roger Manfoo Yee and Eric Yee are due in court Aug. 2 for a preliminary hearing, after pleading not guilty on possession of illegal firearms.

Jurors were selected Monday and Tuesday in Soto’s case. He faces two felony counts of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon for allegedly stabbing Daniel Muir in February 2012.

Moon, who was sentenced to 43 years in state prison after he pleaded guilty to rape, was due in court for a restitution hearing, which was rescheduled for July 29.

McGhee, Higgs and Edwards had a preliminary hearing scheduled for Aug. 14. They are being tried for the murder of Alex Sanchez and attempted murder of Ricardo Sandoval, after they tried to rob Sandoval on Oct. 31, 2011.

Yurman, who is currently in custody facing child annoyance charges at three different locations in the Santa Clarita Valley, had his case continued, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for Aug. 9. He several prior child molestation convictions.

Below are reports from the different Sheriff zone’s throughout the Santa Clarita Valley.

The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station divides its coverage into five zones for the Nixle reports. They are listed below alphabetical order.

Here’s a summary of incidents that took place in the last week in Santa Clarita (If your zone isn’t listed, keep checking back for updates):

Canyon Country west

This past week in Zone 7, the following Part-1 Crimes occurred: (1) Aggravated Assault, (1) Commercial Burglary, (2) Vehicle Burglaries, (2) Shoplift, (3) Grand Thefts and (2) Petty Thefts

An aggravated assault occurred near the 26800 block of Sierra Highway. Three male suspects attacked the victim in the rear alley of the location. The victim sustained moderate injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. The case is currently under investigation by Santa Clarita Station detectives.

A vehicle burglary occurred near the 28000 block of Whites Canyon Road. An unknown suspect shattered the rear driver side window and took personal items from the vehicle. A second vehicle burglary occurred in the LA Fitness parking lot located at 26455 Golden Valley Road. An unknown suspect shattered the front passenger window of the vehicle and took several electronic devices.

A male suspect was arrested for a shoplift/burglary near the 26400 block of Carl Boyer Drive. The suspect attempted to steal a television when he was detained by loss prevention personnel. The suspect was subsequently arrested by responding deputies.

A grand theft occurred near the 18600 block of Via Princessa. Unknown suspects took several bales of cardboard from the rear loading dock of the location. The case is currently under investigation by Santa Clarita Station detectives.

Newhall

Newhall saw ten reported part one crimes within the city limits. Of those ten crimes, Newhall had two assaults, two residential burglaries, one grand theft auto, three petty thefts, one theft from an unlocked vehicle and one shoplift burglary.

Of the two assaults, one was a domestic violence and the other was a family related incident. In the domestic violence incident, which occurred off Race Street, the victim was strangled during an argument with her boyfriend. In the family assault, a father was attacked by his son after a verbal altercation.

There were two residential burglaries in Newhall last week. The first occurred on the 21200 block of Ficus Drive. The victim returned home to find his front screen door and bedroom sliding doors missing from the location. Detectives are following up on possible leads in this case. The second residential burglary occurred on the 25100 block of Highsprings Avenue. The victim believes an acquaintance broke into her residence and stole miscellaneous electrical equipment.

A 2013 Chevy Malibu was reported stolen from the 24000 block of Creekside Drive in Newhall. The vehicle was located in Palmdale the following day.

There were three petty thefts over the past week. One of the thefts occurred at Palace Cleaners on the 23300 block of Lyons Avenue. The victim had his phone stolen from the counter where he left it unattended for a period of time. The second theft occurred at Jack in The Box, located on the 22900 block of Lyons Avenue. The victim had his skateboard stolen when he too left it unattended. The third petty theft occurred on the 25000 block of Chestnut Street. The victim had her bicycle stolen from her front yard where she left it unsecured.

Newhall had a theft from an unlocked vehicle in the parking lot of 7-11, located on the 23400 block of Lyons Avenue. The victim had his phone stolen out of his unlocked vehicle while he was inside the business for approximately five minutes. Detectives are waiting for possible security video of the incident.

The last crime to report was a shoplift burglary from Ralphs on the 24800 block of Orchard Village Road. The suspect entered the store and stole miscellaneous items. He then exited the store without making any attempt to pay for the items.

Saugus

This last week we had only four reported Part-1 crimes keeping the crime rate the lowest in the Santa Clarita Valley. There was one residential burglary on the 27500 block of Falling Star Lane on Thursday, July, 13. The victim, who was in the process of moving out, had miscellaneous electrical equipment stolen while he was out of town. It is believed that entry was made by use of a key in the real estate box on the front door.

There was a vehicle stolen on the 28100 block of Alaminos Drive on Monday, July, 8. The victim witnessed an acquaintance steal his vehicle and drive off out of view. Deputies and detectives are actively searching for the suspect.

We had a grand theft on the 25100 block of Barn Hill Road between Tuesday, July, 2 and Friday, July, 5. While the victim was out of town she had a family member house sit for her. The family member allowed other people in the house who are believed to be responsible for stealing more than $48,000 in jewelry. Detectives are following up on leads in this incident.

There was an arrest made for child abuse on Wednesday, July, 10, on the 25100 block of David Way. The suspect was arrested after assaulting his daughter with a belt and another stationary object.
