Saugus High Grad Killed In Motocross Crash In Piru

Superbike racer Tommy Aquino, a graduate of Saugus High School, died Sunday in a crash at the Piru MX Park, authorities said. He was 21.

Aquino raced dirt bikes as a small boy then switched to street bikes at age 10, according to his Facebook page.

At age 16, he was named AMA Rookie of the Year and then signed as a factory rider with Yamaha for the 2009 and 2010 seasons.In 2012 he competed at Daytona and Laguna Seca, as well as a full season in the Spanish National championship.

According to authorities, shortly before 12:30 p.m. Sunday, a caller reported a head-on collision between two motorcyclists at the track in the 4300 block of Center Street.

One rider was taken to a hospital by helicopter. Aquino was pronounced dead at the scene, according to reports.

Aquino’s death has been confirmed by his family.

Aquino’s website simply shows a black ribbon with the No. 31.

He is survived by his father, Tom; mother, Carrie; and younger brother Michael.

The track he died at hosted a memorial less than two weeks ago for another young Santa Clarita Valley rider who was killed almost two years ago. 

Santa Clarita  resident Cory Tarrant died less than a week after a June 24, 2012, crash on the same track. He was only 17 years old.

The family built the Cory Tarrant Piru Motocross Park Pavilion to honor their son’s memory.

The Tarrants became owners of C and D Motosports in Saugus to support the efforts of their son, who was a local student at Opportunities For Learning, a Hart district charter school.

“Everyone’s out there on the track for the same reason, that they love to ride,” said Cory’s mother, Kathy Tarrant, shortly before her son’s memorial in January. “And you need to be respectful of your fellow riders. We always taught our kids that — to respect the sport.”
