Members of the public are asked for their cooperation in not attending the Active Shooter Drill

“This training drill is intended to prepare deputies for an active response to a shooter,” said Sergeant Dean Currie, Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Department.

The mock active shooter drill is meant to better prepare law enforcement officials to provide for the safety of students and staff if any type of emergency or threatening situation takes place on the school campus.

It is a cooperative effort between the Hart District and the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Department.  By hosting the training exercises at a school facility, it allows for a synergetic cooperation between the two. School staff is able to provide viable information to law enforcement officers regarding specific target areas on campus, and the sheriff's department is able to customize strategies to subdue potential perpetrators based on the layout of each campus.

“We try to do training drills on campus to make deputies familiar with Santa Clarita Valley school campuses,” said Sergeant Dean Currie, Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Department.

“So when we get a call, law enforcement officers are already prepared and have general idea of how the campus is laid out,” according to his statement.

The training exercise will incorporate both students and school administrators in facilitating the training drill by playing the roles of victims, bystanders, or shooters.

The mock drill will involve a call that potential shooters are on campus and law enforcement officers will respond to discover the position of  the perpetrators and attempt to render the situation harmless. After the exercise, students and teachers will debrief and discuss the importance  of the training session and the various responsibilities of adult and students in a time of crises.
