Hugo Carrillo, 30, of Canyon Country, who’s suspected of being an active gang member, sparked a search that lasted several hours in Newhall back in July.

“He was wanted in several crimes, criminal threats and a felon with a gun,” said Detective Mark Barretto of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station’s COBRA unit, who tracked down Carrillo.

Deputies attempted to contact Carrillo after a traffic stop, and Carrillo fled from the scene.

Deputies, including a helicopter unit, took part in a search of the area, near Peachland and Lyons Avenue, where the stop was being conducted, according to Sgt. Allen of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, at the time of the initial incident.

After several hours, the suspect in the search was identified by deputies as Carrillo, and the search was eventually cancelled.

Through the course of Barretto’s investigation, it was discovered that Carrillo was staying with family in Sacramento, Barretto said.

Within hours of alerting officers with the Sacramento Police Department of Carrillo’s whereabouts, he was arrested by area police officers, and then extradited by deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station’s COBRA Unit.

At the time of the traffic stop, deputies suspected Carrillo might have had a firearm that was tucked into his waistband.

It’s illegal for a felon to be in possession of a firearm.

A gun that detectives linked back to Carrillo was later recovered by Sheriff’s Station officials, which is what led to the weapons charge.

The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station’s COBRA unit, which stands for Career Offenders Burglary, Robbery, Assault, investigates juvenile and gang-related crime.

Carrillo pleaded not guilty at his initial arraignment on Sept. 19.

He’s currently being held at Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles in lieu of $190,000 bail.

He’s due back in court Nov. 13.
