The drive runs now until Aug. 29, said Belinda Crawford, executive director for the SCV Food Pantry.

The drive is supported by Santa Clarita, with city officials setting up eight collection locations for donations as a part of their support for the pantry. The Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry

“This is our sixth summer sponsoring the food drive for the Food Pantry and it is a very worthwhile endeavor,” said Santa Clarita Mayor Laurene Weste in a news release. “The Summer Food Drive is a great opportunity for the community to unite and help keep those less fortunate from going hungry.”

There are generally some items needed more than others, although this can change from time to time, according to the Pantry’s website.

“Because we never know what goods our charitable community is going to donate, our needs are very dynamic,” according to the site. “Please check here to see what is needed before you shop or plan an event. Your support is greatly appreciated and is helping to improve the lives of individuals and families in our community facing difficult times.”

Among the top needed items currently on the list are peanut butter, tuna, macaroni and cheese, canned meat, canned fruit, diapers, toothpaste and children’s toothbrushes.

"The city's Summer Food Drive is designed to help the SCV Food Pantry during the critical summer months, when donations are at their lowest and need is at its highest all year," Crawford said. "This food drive helps feed hungry tummies while the schools are not in session and children from low-income families don't receive the free breakfast and lunches provided by the schools."

Other items requested are cereal, oatmeal, pasta, canned beans, soups and tomatoes, shampoo, deodorant and bar soap.

All donations to the Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry are tax deductible, using taxpayer ID No. 95-4014804.

There are also numerous volunteer opportunities for residents interested in helping out, including drivers needed, with information on the Food Pantry’s website.

The SCV Food Pantry needs volunteer drivers to pick up donations from local markets and businesses, officials said.

Drivers must have a valid California driver’s license, the ability to lift 50 lbs. and the willingness to help those less fortunate in the Santa Clarita Valley.

Volunteer drivers are asked to commit to one day per week. Regularly scheduled pick-ups are made Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon.
