Santa Clarita Schools Benefit From Mormon Helping Hands Day

Santa Clarita churches helped with refurbishments and improvements at Saugus Union School District schools Saturday as part of the Mormon Helping Hands Day of Service.

Santa Clarita Schools Benefit From Mormon Helping Hands DayThe Santa Clarita stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints participated in a California-wide Mormon Helping Hands event Saturday by helping out at 10 Saugus Union School District schools.

Mark Elsebusch, a liaison for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was overseeing the improvements at Bridgeport Elementary School and said he was happy to see the schools benefitting from the time of the volunteers.

“There is joy in service and there are benefits to the giver and the receiver,” Elsebusch said. “We are able to benefit from serving, but we are also able to benefit the school.”

8 different Santa Clarita congregations participated to help improve the 10 different schools in Santa Clarita, Elsebusch said.

The Mormon Helping Hands Day of Service saw congregations from across the state of California provide services to their communities.

At Bridgeport Elementary School, Jenna Livingston was among about 20 volunteers helping to repaint fences at the school.

“I love the spirit of what we are doing,” Livingston said. “It’s a great feeling to help.”

Andy Livingston, Bishop for the Mint Canyon ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said his congregation was there to help the community by volunteering their time.

“We hope to follow our savior in giving selfless service and serving our neighbors,” Andy Livingston said. “It is nice to be out here with my family helping to lower the costs for local schools and beautifying the community at the same time.”
