Santa Clarita Looking For City Clerk, HR Manager, New Commissioners
In addition to a pair of new hires, the city of Santa Clarita also is welcoming residents to apply for several city commissioner positions, city officials announced Thursday.

The city of Santa Clarita is looking to hire a full-time City Clerk and a new HR manager, said Gail Morgan, city of Santa Clarita spokeswoman.
Armine Chaparyan, who has been overseeing a slew of tasks for the city of Santa Clarita -- including code enforcement, Old Town Newhall issues and redevelopment, which is being phased out -- held the position of city clerk on an interim basis, Morgan said.
City Manager Ken Striplin has not yet indicated Chaparyan’s next assignment, Morgan said, adding that assignments can change “as the needs of an organization do.” Chaparyan also could apply for the job on a full-time basis, Morgan added.
The City Clerk’s Office has been scrutinized by many over the last few months, in part because of the City Council race and also because of a referendum, both of which are under the purview of the city clerk.
The city’s previous clerk, Sarah Gorman, left Santa Clarita for the same position in Santa Monica more than a year ago.
The city recently began its search for a new HR manager, with Assistant City Manager Frank Oviedo filling that position in addition to his own for several months, Morgan said.
Positions serving on the Arts Commission, the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Commission, the Planning Commission, as well as the Open Space Preservation District Financial Accountability and Audit Panel (FAAP), are also available.
Three terms of office on each commission/panel will expire on July 31, according to a city news release. Selected candidates will each serve four-year terms, which expire on July 31, 2018.
All interested parties must submit an application by 5 p.m. June 13 to the City Clerk’s Office.
All three commissions, as well as the FAAP, are comprised of five members each. The Arts Commission advises the City Council and City staff on arts matters, including public art, arts programs, and art events throughout the community. The Parks, Recreation & Community Services Commission advises the City Council and City staff on parks and public recreation matters, while the Planning Commission advises the City Council on major development projects, property acquisition, specific plans, zoning, and other planning matters. The FAAP ensures that the City’s land acquisition priorities are followed, reviews fund accounts, ensures Preservation District funds are spent properly, and ensures that proposed expenditures are consistent with requirements.
Applicants must be 18 years or older and maintain their principal residence in the City of Santa Clarita during their term of office. Evening availability is also required.
All applicants must submit three letters of recommendation with their application. Applications should be submitted to the City Clerk’s office at Santa Clarita City Hall, located at 23920 Valencia Boulevard, Suite 120.
