Paws to ReadThe “Paws to Read” summer program kicks off on Monday with storytimes, craft days and movies, all celebrating dogs, cats and a plethora of other animals in literature.

“The summer reading program is a great way for kids to keep learning while out of school and for residents of all ages to enhance their reading skills,” said Mayor Laurene Weste in a press release. “This year’s theme is particularly special as readers can show their love for literature and animals by enjoying some of the best ‘friend’ stories of all time.”

In addition to storytimes for babies, toddlers and preschool aged children, kids will be able to make their own fossil during the Fossil Paws event, create dogs toys for a local animal shelter on Dog Day and meet dogs that work with humans during the Working Dogs presentation.

There will also be craft events for teens, manga animal drawing lessons, origami, vegetarian cooking classes and even an opportunity to paint ceramics from Color Me Mine.

Adult events include author experiences with Teresa Rhyne and W. Bruce Cameron, cooking classes and craft days.

The Library will also be showing animal-themed family movies all summer, including “Balto,” “Homeward Bound,” “The Fox and the Hound” and “Curious George.”

For those who want to take an animal friend home with them, St. Bonnie’s Sanctuary of Canyon Country will host pet adoption days at all three library branches from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the following dates:

  • Valencia Library, Saturday, June 21
  • Canyon Country Jo Anne Darcy Library, Saturday, June 28
  • Old Town Newhall Library, Saturday, July 19

New off-site summer reading program events will feature juggler David Cousin, animal balloon making with Buster Balloon, exotic animals from The Wildlife Company and a performance by Wacko the Magician. Click here for exact locations and times.

The Paws to Read program is sponsored in part by the Friends of Santa Clarita Public Library. For a full list of programming, visit SCVSummerReading.com.
