The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson is a worldwide event, held simultaneously at hundreds of locations. It seeks not only to break the record but also to teach water safety skills and raise awareness that water education saves lives.

The local swimming lesson will be held at the Santa Clarita Aquatic Center on Friday at 8 a.m. and will last about 30 minutes.

Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death in children younger than five years, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

"It is tragic. Water safety education helps families understand that drowning is preventable," said Nikki Miller in 2013. She is co-founder of the Aquatic Safety Awareness Program in Valencia. "Safer water with approved pool fencing and alarms, safer kids--learning to swim, and safer response--learning CPR, will help save precious young lives all year long."

World's Largest Swimming Lesson 2013Water safety is also important for adults.

In a recent survey conducted by The Red Cross, 80 percent of adults claimed they could swim, yet 44 percent of respondents believed they would fail a basic swim test, according to a city press release.

The city hosts a variety of water programming at each of its six pools. Children and adults can participate in swim lessons, water exercise, recreational swimming and junior lifeguarding, among other things.

Last year, the event was held at the Academy Swim Club, owned by Miller. The Santa Clarita participants were included in the total of 32,450 worldwide participants who helped break the record.
