Santa Clarita Family To Remember Son At Cory Tarrant Piru Motocross Park Pavilion

When Santa Clarita Valley motocross riders head out to the Cory Tarrant Piru Motocross Park Pavilion to enjoy their local track Sunday, most will be doing so in honor of a teen who died doing what he loved most, a family member said Monday.

“We knew if Cory was still here, that’s where he’d be,” said Cory Tarrant’s mother, Kathy Tarrant, who runs C and D Motosports on Soledad Canyon Road with her husband, Phil, and their son Derek.

“Everyone’s out there on the track for the same reason, that they love to ride,” she said. “And you need to be respectful of your fellow riders. We always taught our kids that — to respect the sport.”The Cory Tarrant Piru Motocross Park Pavilion created by the Tarrants of C and D Motosports

Kathy Tarrant describes the motocross community as tight-knit, and the family-owned shop on Soledad Canyon Road, near Ruether, is a business that also, in many ways, memorializes Cory Tarrant.

PIctures of Cory appear throughout the Tarrants’ shop, as well as supportive words from those who rode alongside him, competitors and friends alike.

It’s still difficult for Kathy Tarrant to watch the riders, she said, but Kathy and Phil, who works in custom-home fabrication, found a way to memorialize their son at his favorite local track.

The Cory Tarrant Piru Motocross Park Pavilion was one way they keep his memory alive at what was, unquestionably, his favorite arena — his local motocross track.

Cory Tarrant died at age 17, less than a week after a June 24, 2012, crash on the same track.

Cory’s brother Derek decided to organize a ride in his brother’s honor less a week later, and that helped inspire the pavilion.

“This is our second year,” she said. “It’s a remembrance.”

Riders will pay a $13 gate fee to ride, which is in memory of the date of Cory’s birthday and one of his riding numbers (13). Cory also rode with no. 100, Kathy Tarrant said, pointing to a bike in C and D Motosports covered with hand-written sentiments from Cory’s friends and families.

The second annual event begins at 9 a.m. Sunday, and the barbecue will begin around noon, and expects to last into the evening. The park has lights at the riding facility.

Cory Tarrant seemed to be happiest on his bike, and Phil and Kathy Tarrant wanted to encourage their son to pursue his passion — as soon as he finished education, Kathy Tarrant said.

They knew riding was a lifestyle for Cory, not just a hobby.

“He lost his life,” Kathy Tarrant said, “and I take some comfort in knowing the fact that, up until that last second, he was having the time of his life.”

The Piru track is located at 4375 Center St, Piru, CA 93040.
