“We found that there is a need for activities for students when they are not in school, so we wanted to keep them engaged and involved, specifically with teens” said Anthony Martinez, human services coordinator at the center. “Giving them a positive environment with role models is beneficial for teens in the city of Santa Clarita.”

A trolley will pick up students at the Newhall Community Center, located at 22421 Market St. in Santa Clarita, at 1 p.m. each day and transport the group to the hike’s location.

Students are encouraged to arrive 30 minutes early with a parent the first time they participate to fill out the necessary forms, which require a parent signature. Students can arrive on time without a parent for subsequent hikes, city officials said.

Golden Valley Ranch TrailHikes are planned for East Walker Ranch, Golden Valley Ranch, Placerita Canyon and Towsley Canyon, and will be supervised by Martinez and three other staff members from the Outreach and Neighborhood Services division at the center.

“We have a three ‘C’s approach– connect, create and cultivate,” Martinez said. “We want to connect our residents to their neighborhoods, resources and the city. We want to create opportunities for learning, playing, serving and mentoring. And we want to cultivate neighborhood leadership, ownership and pride.”

The trolley will drop students off at the center at 5 p.m. following the hikes. Students can go on just one hike or as many as they’d like.
