Los Angeles County Fire Department officials are bringing their Quakey Shakey trailer, as well as several opportunities to meet Santa Clarita Valley firefighters, and Mini of Valencia is donating a car for a “Jaws of Life” demonstration Saturday. The Los Angeles County Fire Department's Quakey Shakey trailer

County firefighters Fire Stations 126 and 150, as well as a paramedics squad from Fire Station 111, will be available for residents to meet and ask questions, said Stephanie English, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

“We’re really happy to take part in the expo, because we want people to come out and talk to our firefighters and learn how to be prepared ahead of a disaster,” English said.

To that end, the county Fire Department is providing a $500,000 trailer capable of simulating an earthquake to help prepare children in event of an emergency. The trailed has helped train more than a half-million children and their parents since their first training in1986, English said.

In addition, Mini of Valencia is donated a 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix for the “jaws of life” demonstration taking place Saturday at 3 p.m..

“I think this is a great event, to witness it in a non-life-threatening situation, so you can really see how great it is without actually having to actually be in danger,” said Mark LeCompte, general Manager for Mini of Valencia.

“There’s a lot of services provided by the Fire Department that people don’t know about,” English said, mentioning trainings throughout the community, such as the Community Emergency Response Training classes offered through the city of Santa Clarita, which are taught by trained personnel from the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The Quakey Shakey trailer will simulate a relatively minor 3.5 earthquake in a vehicle designed to look like a classroom, so children are taught how to duck and cover in the event of the next “big one.”

“It looks like an old-fashioned classroom, and you go and sit at the desk, and then an earthquake happens as you’re sitting at the desk,” said KHTS AM-1220 co-owner Carl Goldman. “You have to do everything -- it shakes rattles and rolls.”
