TimBen Boydston’s beef with Santa Clarita compensation

The discussion of a compensation claim by City Councilman TimBen Boydston will not be discussed publicly, as it has been slated for closed session.

KHTS AM-1220 first learned of the report Thursday, which was then confirmed by city officials.

Boydston is claiming slightly more than $9,600 in damages from the city of Santa Clarita over back pay he felt he was entitled to, due to what he called an illegal compensation change enacted by City Council in 2010.

If the claim is successful, Boydston has said he will give the money to local nonprofits. City officials have said they will not comment on the status or nature of the claim, because it’s an item that will be discussed in closed session.

Santa Clarita’s general election

And just as one election ends, another one is about to get under way.

With Tuesday’s election barely in the rear-view mirror, Santa Clarita City officials are scheduled to adopt a resolution calling and giving notice of the General Municipal Election to be held April 8.

A Santa Clarita city staff report is asking council members to authorize the city manager or designee to execute a contract with Martin & Chapman Co. to provide election services in the amount of $162,000, subject to city attorney approval, to pay for local election costs.

The procedures that will be announced, which are set by state law, include:

The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on election day. The candidate filing period will open Dec 16, and run until 5 p.m. Jan. 10. If any incumbent. does not file by this deadline, the filing period is extended five calendar days, until Jan. 15, when candidates, other than incumbents, may file.

City Council incumbent Frank Ferry declared his intention not to seek re-election several times from the dais, however Laurene Weste and Marsha McLean both have said they will be trying to retain their seats.

Several challengers have already made their intentions to run for Santa Clarita City Council known.

Dante Acosta, Alan Ferdman, Berta Gonzalez-Harper, Maria Gutzeit, Duane Harte and Gloria Mercado-Fortine have thrown their hat into the proverbial ring, and Diane Trautman has discussed an exploratory committee, although the formal filing period has yet to start.

Santa Clarita building codes

The California Building Standards Code (building code) is updated and published every three years under the direction of the California Building Standards Commission, according to the City Council’s agenda.

The building code comprises Title 24 of the California Code of Regulations and is intended to provide for the safety and welfare of all citizens through the implementation of the latest technology, materials, engineering, construction and sustainability methods, as regulated by the latest adopted building codes.

California mandates that local jurisdictions adopt and commence enforcement of the latest state codes within six months of the adoption by the state.

This ordinance adopts the 2013 California Building Standards Codes with an effective date of Jan. 1, as required by State law and also adopts local amendments to the State codes establishing higher standards for structural and fire protection in new buildings based on local climatic, geologic and topographical conditions, as well as administrative provisions for enforcement of the codes at the local level.
