Santa Clarita Artists Association Invites Community To Monthly Meeting

Gerald Brommer will demonstrate “Collage and Line, Independent of Shape” at the May 20 meeting of the Santa Clarita Artists’ Association (SCAA).

This event is free and open to the public.

Brommer is an internationally known watercolor and acrylic painter, collagist, teacher, author and juror.

He has written 23 books for high school and college art classes, on a wide range of subjects. He has also edited many high school and college texts and teacher resource books.

He has completed filming 14 videos, of which, 10 are produced for use in art education classes, and four for practicing artists.

After 26 years of teaching high school art, Brommer continues his teaching activities by leading workshops in the United States, Europe, Mexico, Canada and South America. Some are location workshops working en plein-air, while others are studio classes in design, watercolor or four different approaches to working with collage.

He is a Life Member and Past President of the National Watercolor Society, and Honorary President of the National Association of Painters in Acrylics. His work has appeared in books, as well as in American Artist, Southwest Art and The Artist Magazine.

Sonora Church is a stained paper collage with watercolor and gouache.

The image is first drawn on a piece of heavy watercolor paper then small pieces of stained paper are torn and adhered to the support with acrylic matte medium. This creates a rough image, that is refined by painting with watercolor to darken places and with gouache to lighten areas, lines or edges.

Ponte Vecchio is acrylic and collage on canvas.

A contour drawing is made on gessoed canvas, using a fat permanent marker. A loose acrylic underpainting is brushed on the entire canvas covering the lines. A variety of rice paper, adhered with matte medium is applied and allowed to dry. Thin acrylic color glazes are brushed on allowing textures to show through.

Down the Big Sur Coast is an acrylic/collage on canvas.

Exhibitions include American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, Water USA Honor Society, Birmingham Art Museum, Butler Institute of American Art, National Academy of Design, West Coast Watercolor Society, Watercolor West, The Royal Watercolor Society in London, Federation of Canadian Artists, Frye Museum of Art, Laguna Beach Museum of Art, Watercolor Now, Watercolor Exhibition by Artists of Republic of China, United States and Australia in Taiwan.
