Santa Barbara Hit By Magnitude 4.6 Earthquake

An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.6 Wednesday morning near Isla Vista, just west of Santa Barbara, rattled the Southern California coast and a few inland areas.

Magnitude-4.6 Quake Shakes SoCal CoastThe off-shore quake was reported at 7:38 a.m. The location (map) was about three miles west of Isla Vista and 12 miles west of Santa Barbara in the Santa Barbara Channel.

The quake was initially reported with a magnitude of 4.9, but downgraded to magnitude-4.6.

NBC LA Facebook page visitors reported shaking in Oxnard, Granada Hills, Woodland Hills, Canyon Country and Santa Barbara. A magnitude-2.6 quake, possibly an aftershock, was reported about 12 minutes later in the same area.

"I could hear my entire spiral staircase rattling, and it woke me up," said Jen Marlow, of Oxnard Shores. "It lasted a pretty long time."

There have been no reports of injuries or significant damage. No tsunami warnings, advisories or watches are in effect.
