I-5 Freeway Construction Expected To Affect Traffic

Category:

Two California Department of Transportation (CalTrans) projects meant to add lanes to Interstate 5 will begin affecting traffic Monday night.

The goal of the first project is to widen the I-5 freeway and add a truck lane to the Southbound side between Pico Canyon Road/Lyons Avenue to State Route 14 and on the Northbound side from SR-14 to Gavin Canyon.

A truck lane will be added by paving the median area and shifting mixed-flow lanes inward.

Closure dates begin Tuesday, Jan. 21 and are scheduled to end Saturday, Jan. 25. No unusual levels of dust, noise or vibration are expected.

The closures include:

Up to three lanes of Northbound I-5 between the end of the existing truck lane and Lyons Avenue: 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Although at least one lane will be open at all times. The largest number of lane closures will occur between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m.

Up to three lanes of Southbound I-5 between Lyons Avenue and the end of the existing truck lane: 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Although at least one lane will be open at all times. The largest number of lane closures will occur between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m.

The Southbound I-5 connector to Northbound SR-14: 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Calgrove Boulevard off-ramp: 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The second CalTrans project is meant to add a carpool lane on both sides of I-5 by demolishing the existing median barrier on I-5 between Van Nuys Boulevard and SR-118.

Closures will begin the night of Monday, Jan. 20, and are scheduled to end early February.

The two lanes closest to the median, on both sides of the freeway, will be closed between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m., excluding Friday and Saturday nights.

Driver may hear construction, notice vibrations and see construction lighting.
