The port recognized a number of Princess’ environmental activities including fitting vessels with opacity monitors, using oily water separators, and exemplary waste reduction efforts – including providing used cooking oil from ships for making biodiesel.
“We’re gratified that the port has recognized us for making a difference in local environmental efforts,” said Jan Swartz, Princess Cruises executive vice president. “Passengers come to beautiful ports such as Seattle to experience the area’s natural beauty, so we are committed to doing our part to keep it that way.”
Princess Cruises is part of Carnival Corporation, owner of Carnival Cruise Line and one of the largest vacation companies in the world.
History of the Company
Princess Cruises first set sail in 1965 with a single ship cruising to Mexico. Today, the line has grown to become the third largest cruise line in the world, known for innovative ships, an array of onboard options, and an environment of exceptional customer service.
The cruise line was catapulted to stardom in 1977 when one of its ships, Pacific Princess, was cast in a starring role on a new television show called “The Love Boat.” The show, which can still be seen around the world, has been widely credited with fueling the dramatic expansion of the industry.
A recognized leader in worldwide cruising, Princess offers approximately 1.3 million passengers each year the opportunity to escape to the top destinations around the globe, aboard a fleet of 16 modern vessels.
Commitment to the Environment
Princess Cruises is committed to environmental practices which set a high standard for excellence and responsibility, and which help preserve the marine environment in which its ships operate. The company’s environmental goals and policies go beyond what is required by law and include a zero solid waste discharge policy, state-of-the-art environmental technology and waste management equipment, programs to minimize waste generated, and recycling where possible. The company also pioneered the use of shore power programs in the cruise industry to reduce air emissions.
