Poor Man’s Poison Of The Texaco Country Showdown Returns To The SCV

Poor Man’s Poison won the Texaco Country Showdown this past year. They recently headlined at the City of Santa Clarita’s Concerts in the Park

But they have not let the fame interrupt the cohesiveness of the group when they said that they are “always going to play together no matter what. [They] have been doing it for years since [they] were kids.”

Poor Man’s Poison started in the Santa Clarita Valley competing to be the local finalist to be sponsored by KHTS. Eventually they moved on to the State Finals at Knott’s Berry Farm, then the Regional Finals in Oregon, and landed themselves a spot in the National Finals in Nashville, Tenn. at the historic Ryman Auditorium.

The Texaco Country Showdown is America’s largest country music talent search. Thousands of aspiring artists compete in local competitions hosted by radio stations for the chance to be sponsored by one of the stations.

The finalists then move on the State and Regional Finals, where judges narrow down the artists until one competes from all five regions in the United States. The top five finalists compete at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn. the “Country Music Capital of the U.S.”

These artists compete for the grand prize of $100,000 and the title “Best New Act in Country Music.” Previous Texaco Country Showdown winners include Jason Aldean, Martina McBride, Garth Brooks, Miranda Lambert, Neal McCoy, Sara Evans, and Billy Ray Cyrus.

Poor Man’s Poison exhibited their strength throughout the competition and received the grand prize. Ever since then they have continued to play their music and have seen how that one opportunity has changed their lives.

Poor Man’s Poison consists of band members Ryan Hakker, Dustin Medeiros, Mike Jacobs, and Tommy McCarthy. All men are vocalists for the band. Ryan Hakker plays guitar along with Mike Jacobs. Dustin Medeiros has adopted the upright bass and Tommy McCarthy plays the mandolin.

They performed at Concerts in the Park recently, and one member, Dustin Medeiros, even helped judge and choose the local finalist for the Texaco Country Showdown this year.

When asked about their feelings on performing back at the same venue that led them on their journey to become the winner of the Texaco Country Showdown they said, ”its amazing to be back here, we had so much fun last year, just to be a part of the Texaco Country Showdown again and witness someone else moving on. We had such a good experience, and we are happy to be a part of this one as well.”

Poor Man’s Poison had never considered themselves Country music before. They had all played in bands with different genres before and “just kind of played and wrote and whatever came out, came out,” said the band.

They were thankful that the Country music world welcomed them with open arms and are open to any genre that will accept them.

The group is simply happy to be together, doing what they love, making music.

“We have gotten crazy busy, which is a blessing,” explains the band, “we are just happy to be here.”
