Poor Man’s Poison Headlines At Concerts In The Park This Weekend

This past year, the band Poor Man’s Poison won the Texaco Country Showdown in Nashville, Tenn. held at the legendary Ryman Auditorium. They also received the title “Best New Act in Country Music” along with $100,000. Poor Man’s Poison started out locally in Santa Clarita where they were sponsored by KHTS AM-1220. They went through the rounds of local competition eventually advancing to the National Final Round of the Texaco Country Showdown to compete for the title amongst four other artists.

Since taking home the title and money, they have recently released a new album “Live at the Fox” to add to their earlier albums including “Friends with the Enemy” from 2011 and “Poor Man’s Poison” from 2009.

The band consists of Ryan Hakker, Dustin Medeiros, Mike Jacobs, and Tommy McCarthy. All men are vocalists for the band. Ryan Hakker plays guitar along with Mike Jacobs. Dustin Medeiros, formerly a drummer, has adopted the upright bass with Tommy McCarthy on the mandolin.

Poor Man’s Poison will be performing locally again this Saturday, July 13 at Concerts in the Park. Here they will be the headlining band with this year’s semi-finalists competing beforehand.

The semi-finalists include Suzanne Harper, Marie Wise-Hawkins, and Bourbon County. Each is hoping to advance to the State Finals at Knott’s Berry Farm held on August 17.

Poor Man’s Poison has a unique style of music. They have been described as Folk Rock/ Americana, but fall into the Country category as well.

Mike Jacobs says that when they started, “there wasn’t any specific type of music [they] wanted to create, just whatever they were feeling at that particular time.”

With each one of them having a rock background, they play “old-timey” country because they enjoy acoustic.

They are inspired to keep playing music because of the support of their fans. Overall, they just love playing music and the fact that they get to do it with their best friends is more than they would have ever asked for.

Poor Man’s Poison was invited to play for the troops at Guantanamo Bay where they were excited to show their support and thank the troops for their hard work.

“[They] had never thought of themselves as country,” claims the band, “but the country world accepted [them] with open arms.”

The band claims that the best part of winning the Texaco Country Showdown is that they made lifelong friends and can reach out to others through their music.

For those who have not heard the band live, they should expect to see four best friends doing what they love. They play “original, honest music that is based off of each one of [their] personal life experiences,” explains Mike Jacobs. They try to relate to the audience and with family based music there is often three to four generations of family in attendance.
