Santa Clarita Valley-AV Assembly Candidates Discuss California Politics

Cougar News, KHTS AM-1220, SCVTV and The Signal hosted a candidate forum at SCVTV Studios recently, when 36th Assembly District candidates answered several questions from a panel of Santa Clarita Valley journalists.

The candidates for the 36th Assembly District seat currently held by Steve Fox, D-Palmdale, which includes the east side of the Santa Clarita Valley, are: Fox, Kermit Franklin, J.D. Kennedy, Tom Lackey and Suzette Martinez.

The candidates the following questions by Cougar News's Halie Cook, KHTS AM-1220's Perry Smith and The Signal's Luke Money. The forum was moderated by SCVTV's Leon Worden.

Candidates were asked the following questions:

1. What do you think can be done at a state level to address the concern about our water supply?

2. Redevelopment zones have played a big role in the development of Santa Clarita, but with their elimination, how would you compensate to support local growth?

3. If elected, what are you going to do to stem the flow of manufacturing, aerospace and film industry jobs from California?

4. AB 109 has been roundly criticized by law enforcement officials, but prison overcrowding is a significant problem. How would you address the issue without releasing more criminals from jail?

5. California has one of the highest minimum wages -- why do you think this is good for our state, or is this something you’d like to change?

6. Some have criticized CEQA as an obstacle to growth, while others see it as a vital safeguard for our environment. What are your views on this piece of legislation?

7. The Proposition 30 tax increases were temporary. If our revenue levels decline again, would you be in favor of continuing them if it meant remaining solvent?

8. What party do you belong to, and why?
