Friday at 5 p.m., the deadline for City Council incumbents to file for passes, which would mark the beginning of the end of a 16-year run for Ferry, aka “Mayor Dude,” on the dais at City Hall.City of Santa Clarita file photo

Ferry, who works as principal at Mission Hills’ Alemany High School, had not pulled the paperwork required to file a City Council bid. He ran successfully in 1998, 2002, 2006 and 2010.

The move confirms Ferry’s previously announced intentions, which, he said, were to step away from politics to spend more time with his family.

Ferry’s decision, as the lone incumbent not to seek re-election, pushes the filing deadline for City Council candidates back to Jan. 15.

City Clerk Armine Chaparyan said a list of candidates will be available Jan. 16 on a website created by Santa Clarita officials to help residents stay informed, called votesantaclarita.com.

As of Friday morning, there were 12 individuals considering a run for City Council, who had made an appointment with the City Clerk’s Office.

A dozen potential candidates who have “pulled papers,” according to Chaparyan, however, a resident who seeks to qualify for the ballot could walk in and pull papers any time before Jan. 15, if Ferry does not.

Santa Clarita Mayor Laurene Weste and Mayor Pro Tem Marsha McLean have filed their paperwork for a run in April.

There are 10 other residents who have filed their paperwork, and KHTS AM-1220 plans to update this story at 5 p.m. to post all challengers who have filed their intent to run.

As of now, the list of residents who have pulled papers includes Dante Acosta, Moazzem H. Chowdhury, Dennis Conn, Stephen P. Daniels, Alan Ferdman, Berta Gonzalez-Harper, Maria Gutzeit, Duane Harte, McLean, Gloria Mercado-Fortine, Weste and Paul Wieczorek.

Ferry did not return numerous calls seeking comment for this story.

Per state law, a resolution was adopted at a November City Council meeting that calls and gives notice for a general municipal election to be held April 8, for the purpose of electing three councilmembers for a term of four years each.

This resolution also states that the polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day.

The Candidate Filing Period opened Dec. 16.
