There are 13 City Council candidates on the ballot: Dante Acosta, Sandy Bull, Moazzum Chowdhury, Dennis Conn, Stephen Daniels, Alan Ferdman, Berta Gonzalez-Harper, Maria Gutzeit, Duane Harte, Marsha McLean, Gloria Mercado-Fortine and Laurene Weste were in attendance. Paul Wieczorek was not able to attend due to a work obligation.

The candidates were asked seven questions: the panelists asked six, and Santa Clarita City Councilman Frank Ferry asked a seventh question, via a prerecorded video message.

The forum aired for the first time in its entirety on SCVTV on Monday from 7-9 p.m., and will be available online as of Monday afternoon at

The topics ranged from how city resources should best be used to the billboard proposal to the emergency winter shelter.

The candidates were given a 90-second opening statement, and one minute to answer questions.

Below are videos of the candidates’ answers. Click on the video to see the candidates’ complete answers to all of the questions. (The videos are displayed in alphabetical order.)

1. Do you think we should change anything about the structure of our current form of government? For example, the number of seats on City Council, having an elected mayor, districts, etc.?

2. The city is looking at a billboard proposal from Metro. What do you think the city should do about it?

3. Should the Santa Clarita Valley’s emergency winter shelter be available year round to serve the entire SCV -- and if so, where should it be located?

4. What do you think is the proper role for a City Council member in terms of managing staff?

5. Frank Ferry question: If the city was considering the annexation of Stevenson Ranch and Westranch, would you support it? Why or why not?

6. In order to encourage economic growth, the city  regular supports businesses with either tax incentives, or subsidies to bring more jobs to Santa Clarita. If elected, what types of these incentives or subsidies would you propose?

7. When is it appropriate for the city to use its public tax dollars to support services the county is responsible for funding? Can you provide an example?
